While we love the timber cladding commonly used in garden office design, we find it exciting when we see designers making use of other materials on the exterior of their buildings. This garden office by MOSSpods has really caught our eye for this reason.
The 4m x 6.4m building is an example of MOSSpods River Range. The key feature of the design is the use of dark grey corrugated metal cladding. Often referred to as 'wriggly tin' this is a material commonly used on traditional farm buildings but looks fantastic when used as part of a contemporary design too.
The MOSSpods team have used the corrugated cladding in blocks, framed with the Larch cladding. As it ages, the Larch will change from its natural honey colour to a silvery grey. The aged tone will work equally well with the dark grey.
The doors and windows are a dark grey aluminium, high spec finish. It is very effective using a minimal palette of materials like this.
A durable finish
This garden office will require minimal maintenance to stay looking good. Larch is a durable cladding with natural resistance to rot, and fungal attack and the corrugated metal cladding is factory coated, so will not need painting to maintain its colour. The same goes for the aluminium doors and windows.
Designed with the future in mind
The building was designed as a home office, but with an eye to a different use in the future. The building includes a shower room so that the space could be used as holiday accommodation in the future.
The MOSSpods team handled the installation of the shower room and connections to the mains water, sewerage and electric of the house. All work was signed off by Building Control meaning that the room can legally be slept in as per the Building Regulations.
Incorporating a shower room does bump up the initial cost of a garden room. It will, however, reap the rewards over the years. It creates a self-contained apartment away from the main house suitable for multiple different uses. It will also add a desirable selling point and add value to your house when you come to sell.
As a guide, this 25.6sqm building cost £36,700 plus VAT. Supplied on a turnkey installation basis - so the MOSSpods team handled everything from design through to handing over the keys.
