We have recently been introduced to the work of Garden Bothies, who are based in Aberdeenshire and install their contemporary style garden rooms across the UK.
Co-founders Chris & Matt share a passion for intelligent design, efficient construction, environmentally responsible materials and have the goal to provide people with a space that has been considered for its function and its place in the ecosystem.
Standard designs and a bespoke design service
Garden Bothies offer a range of standard design options alongside a bespoke design service. They offer three ranges the Bothy, Den and Studio. They range in size from 2.6m x 2.6m for the Bothy up to 5m x 3.8m for the Studio range.
Each size is then available in three styles, Authentic, Crafted and Refined. The Authentic range offers sharp, clean lines. While the Crafted range focuses on privacy, we like how the front wall has been set at an angle and how timber screens have been positioned. The Refined range opens up a palette of stylish materials and has a striking angled roofline that really stands out from the crowd.
Price-wise, the 2.6m x 2.6m Authentic Bothy retails at £13,250 plus VAT.
Alongside their garden room designs, Garden Bothies also offer a range of garden annexes that can be lived in. The 6m x 5m Annex Authentic range is priced from £41,250 plus VAT.
Garden Bothies manufacture their rooms in their Aberdeenshire workshops. If the site access allows for it, the building can be fully assembled and delivered to the site by a lorry with HIAB and lifted into position. With this system, once the services have been connected to the mains supplies, your room will be ready to move into.
Alternatively, the Garden Bothies team will deliver the materials and build your room on site. The installation process taking between 2 and 4 weeks, depending on the buildings size and its complexity.
Well specified garden rooms
As we mentioned earlier, founders Chris & Matt want their buildings to be as environmentally friendly as possible. To this end, they have chosen a building system that ensures a highly insulated core, sourced locally grown cladding and chosen finishes that offer a long maintenance-free lifespan. Combined, these choices create a building that will be comfortable to use all year round, efficient to run and require little maintenance in the long term.
They have chosen ground screws for the foundation of their buildings. The system they have chosen is Building Control compliant, and creates a solid level base, quickly and efficiently.
The Garden Bothies' core structure is made from SIP's; this creates a highly insulated envelope, which ensures your room will be a comfortable place to spend time all year round.
Garden Bothies use Scottish Larch for the exterior cladding, as standard. Larch is a highly durable cladding choice. The Garden Bothies team can machine the boards to your preferred profile, whether this be board on board, tongue & groove, shadow gap or shiplap.
The Garden Bothies team have sourced a palette of alternative exterior finishes, if you wish to upgrade the Scottish Larch. Options include a durable and maintenance-free, wood effect cladding, manufactured as a recycled plastic & wood composite and; Japanese sourced Shou Sugi Ban (charred Japanese cypress) available with full charring or varying degrees of brushed/treated finishes.
When it comes to the roof covering, Garden Bothies use an EPDM membrane which is fitted in one piece. You can then add a sedum roof covering if you wish, or if you choose a building with an angled roofline, you could decide to extend the cladding over the roof structure, which is really cool feature.
The doors and windows are high spec triple glazed Alu-Clad. The triple glazing offers greater thermal performance than their double glazed counterparts. The powder-coated aluminium frames provide a low maintenance finish that will stand the test of time.
The Garden Bothies team has options for sleek frameless glazing and roof windows when working on bespoke projects.
Inside, the Garden Bothies range has a plastered and decorated interior, as standard. Mixed with engineered wood flooring finished with double groove white skirting boards, the interior has a light modern feel.
Other interior finishes offered include beech plywood panelling, acoustic soundproof panelling for the walls and ceiling and micro-cement or Terrazzo tile for floors.
