Garden offices are a great solution for remote workers. Offering the flexibility of working from home, but detached from the distractions of the main house. Green Studios were commissioned by the owner of a market research company, who realised that he could save money on renting offices across the country, and save valuable time to commute between them, by setting up office in the garden.
Green Studios client decided that an office in the garden could serve multiple uses, encompassing both work and play. He commissioned a 5m x 3m building in Green Studios signature contemporary style. With the intention of it being used as a home office by day and family games and TV room after hours.
The interior has been divided into two zones. At one end a desk and whiteboards have been fitted. At the other end, a sofa, shelving and a TV have been fitted. As a keen cyclist, Green Studios client has also included a turbo trainer so that he can train as he watches TV!
Hardwired IT and AV systems
When working remotely, you need reliable internet connections. To ensure this Green Studios hardwired data and audiovisual cabling from the main house to the garden office. This is a more expensive, but more reliable option than many companies offer. They tend to rely on HomePlug systems which transmit data and telephone connections via the electrical network. We know from experience that the service from these HomePlug systems can be patchy. It is well worth the additional expense of paying for a hardwired connection, as Green Studios offer if you will be working from your garden room.
High-spec finishes as standard
One of the reasons that the customer chose Green Studios to build his garden office was that the high-spec finishes he desired were included as standard. Where with other companies they would have been extras. These standard finishes included Cedar cladding and aluminium doors. Internally, the walls and ceiling are plastered and decorated, as standard, and engineered real wood flooring is used. Heating is another standard option, in this case, a discreet electric wall panel.
Green Studios client opted for an open board external cladding system. Green Studios are one of a few companies who offer this stylish cladding finish. The Cedar cladding is spaced so that there are shadow gaps between each board. Even with the gaps, this is a durable external finish. A specialist membrane is fitted behind the timber cladding which protects the core structure.
A set of sliding doors and a full height window create a glazed corner at one end of the room. A rectangular window has been fitted high in the rear wall, letting in extra light and allowing for easy ventilation.
Clever design disguises the sloping site
The garden office sits on a sloping section of ground. The foundation systems that Green Studios use allow them to build on sloping sites with relative ease. A couple of steps have been fitted leading up to the sliding doors to overcome the sloping ground. It is a clever design trick, that the Green Studios team have used here. They have painted the fascia around the foundation and the steps black. This helps them blend into the garden and draws the eye to the cladding, clever!
