If you are looking for a contemporary-style garden room in North London, you’ll want to check out the work of Alpaca Garden Rooms. Led by designer/carpenter Tim Worsley, they create buildings that are comfortable to use all year round, incorporating eco-friendly materials that enhance the efficiency of the room.
Alpaca Garden Rooms specialise in bespoke designs, sitting down with clients to fully understand how they intend to use their new space and integrating the desired design features and finishes into their build.
Based in North London, Tim and his team excel at maximising the use of space in London gardens and navigating challenging access issues.
Curious about the origin of the name Alpaca Garden Rooms? We asked Tim to explain:
The name Alpaca signifies the overall comfort you’ll experience inside one of our rooms. Much like Alpaca fleece, the breathable insulation ensures comfort throughout the year, and the MVHR units maintain superior air quality. Additionally, the VOC count in wood fibre insulation is much lower than that in traditional insulations such as PIR or Rockwool, presenting a healthier alternative. (Rest assured, no Alpacas are harmed in the process...;-)
Designed for Year-Round Comfort
Tim launched Alpaca Garden Rooms with the aim to create comfortable rooms usable every day of the year, while avoiding the common wastefulness in the construction industry. He has crafted a multi-layer build-up based on traditional timber framing techniques.
One of the key eco-friendly decisions Tim made was to choose wood fibre insulation boards instead of opting for a SIPs build-up or PIR insulation like Celotex. Wood fibre insulation, a carbon-negative material made from bonded timber waste, creates a complex cell structure within the boards. It has a greater thermal mass compared to other insulations, which helps in regulating the temperature inside the room, taking longer to react to external temperature changes.
Not only does wood fibre insulation create a thermally comfortable environment, but it also absorbs and releases moisture, which helps manage humidity levels and reduces the risk of condensation. The dense fibrous structure of wood fibre insulation additionally serves to reduce sound transmission, making it ideal for urban projects.
Alpaca Garden Rooms are completed with quality doors and windows that feature double-glazed units. The crittal style glazing used in some of these projects adds a distinctive character.
If desired, Alpaca Garden Rooms can also incorporate a living roof covering. The sedum plants used require little maintenance, enhance the aesthetic appeal when viewed from above, and contribute to the biodiversity of your garden.
Luxury Garden Room Interiors
Inside, Alpaca Garden Rooms are finished to a high standard with plastered and decorated walls and ceilings, complemented by your choice of flooring. As bespoke designers, Tim and his team are equipped to incorporate any unique features you require, such as storage solutions.
Garden Room with MVHR System
The well-specified multi-layer construction of Alpaca Garden Rooms ensures they are comfortable to use throughout the year. They complete their specification with an MVHR system, which stands for Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery.
This system draws stale air from the room and introduces fresh air from outside. As the stale air is extracted, it passes through a heat exchanger, simultaneously with the cold air from outside. The heat from the outgoing air is transferred to the incoming cold air, thus reducing the heating requirements and enhancing the efficiency of the system.
