We have long been fascinated by the work of Rotunda Living. Having been a carpenters ourself we know its one thing to build square structures and another thing to build in the round!
With this in mind we were fascinated to hear that Rotunda Living were working on a twin Rotunda. We were intrigued to see how they would connect two round structures together. Now that we see the finished building we are more than impressed.
The twin Rotunda is being used as a meditation centre in Essex and is made up of a 4 meter diameter (internal size) Rotunda and a 2.1 meter diameter (internal size) Rotunda with a clever covered deck area which ties the buildings together.
The two buildings have slightly different specifications:
The large Rotunda features:
200mm Sheepswool insulation, smooth MDF internal panels finished with Farrow & Ball paint, Full electrics including an LED lighting array, external lights, and brushed steel switches and sockets, a 900mm double glazed polycarbonate dome, underfloor heating system, commercial grade chateau oak laminate flooring, douglas fir windows and signature Rotunda door with steel mandala in the central disc.
The small Rotunda features:
100mm Knauf earthwool insulation in the walls and ceiling, Smooth MDF internal panels with a Farrow & Ball paint finish, softwood floorboards, electrics, and a 700mm double glazed polycarbonate roof dome. This unit also includes an eco composting toilet which requires no mains water or waste connection.
The exterior of both buildings includes waney edged larch cladding, and part-recycled bitumen slate roof shingles.
The project took 2 months to complete – this is a combination of both workshop and onsite time.
As you can see from these images the detailing on the Rotunda’s is impressive, particularly the roof structure.
