Continuing our recent series on garden rooms used as extensions we were interested to receive details of this garden room extension recently completed by in.it.studios. in.it.studios have created this contemporary garden room extension for a hospice in Newcastle to provide patients with a tranquil rehabilitation room.
The garden room extension measures 5.9m deep x 7.6m wide and has created a predominant feature for the hospice with it being clearly visible when approaching the main entrance. Its cedar clad appearance and timber construction distinguishes itself from the brick built hospice with a contemporary aesthetic yet retains an appearance sympathetic to its environment.

The extension at St Oswald’s Hospice in Newcastle was part of a larger refurbishment project handled by T.Manners & Sons and architects Jane Darbyshire and David Kendall Ltd.
in.it.studios were initially contacted due to their ability to deliver a building in an efficient and incredibly quick turnaround period whilst still maintaining a high degree of quality. After discussions in February 2011 followed by planning and building regulation necessities, the garden room took 3 weeks to build and was finished 2 weeks before the planned deadline date being the end of April.
Working alongside T Manners & Sons, whom were the main contractor on site, the building was delivered proficiently and within perfect schedule. Even though this well established building company were more than competent in the construction of this Rehabilitation Room, and were carrying out most of the building work on the project, they approached in.it.studios to carry out the rehabilitation room as they were able to utilise a prefabricated construction approach, meet the tight deadline and also provide a very cost effective solution for both the Client and Contractor. In addition to this, because all the manufacturing is done in-house by highly skilled carpenters and joiners, in.it.studios were able to ensure the quality was maintained in all areas of the build. The design was also adopted without problems and changed along the way and during construction to meet the architects and clients requirements.
Studio extensions or standalone buildings provide an ideal solution for schools, nurseries or homes as well as commercial properties requiring that extra living / working space for an affordable price, as demonstrated above.
