Crusoe Bespoke Garden Room Gym

Crusoe Bespoke Garden Room Gym

Published: 20 May 2025
Reading Time: 3 minutes

Ordering a second garden room is a clear sign of just how much value a Crusoe Garden Room can add to your lifestyle. For this Surrey client, it was a natural step—having enjoyed the benefits of their first Crusoe building, a 5m x 3m pool house completed in 2019, they returned to commission a new bespoke garden gym.

Crusoe Garden Rooms Limited are no strangers to repeat commissions; in fact, this isn’t the first time they’ve built a second room for the same client. You can see another example here.

First a Pool House

The first project, a fully-equipped pool house, included a three-leaf aluminium bi-fold door set, underfloor heating, a loo, and 5m x 1.2m decked terrace—demonstrating Crusoe’s ability to deliver garden buildings that are both functional and stylish.

The brief for the second building was to create a dedicated home gym, designed to feel like a natural extension of the home and tailored to the client’s training needs.

Designed for Gym Use

Measuring 4.8m wide by 4m deep, the new garden room benefits from a taller-than-standard 2.8m external height. This offers 300mm more headroom than the usual 2.5m garden room height—ideal for gym use, where ceiling height makes a difference when using taller equipment or performing overhead exercises. Not all companies can accommodate this, but as bespoke builders, Crusoe Garden Rooms work closely with clients to meet specific requirements like this.

Angled Wall Design Adds Character

One of the most striking design features is the angled front elevation, which is enhanced by a 500mm roof canopy that extends beyond the façade. This subtle twist angles the large 3m-wide, three-panel aluminium bi-fold doors to face deeper into the garden, framing a more interesting view and allowing the gym space to open up beautifully to the outdoors—perfect for workouts on sunny days. A wide opening window on the right-hand side allows fresh air to circulate even when the doors are closed.

Built Around the Client’s Needs

The benefits of working with a bespoke designer like Crusoe Garden Rooms are clear in the details. For example, extra structural timbers were incorporated into the walls and ceiling where gym equipment would be mounted—ensuring a safe and secure installation. This level of tailoring is rarely possible with standardised or modular designs.

Inside, Crusoe finish their rooms like a true extension of the house, with fully plastered and decorated walls and ceiling. In this case, the interior was painted black to create a bold, immersive space, complemented by specialist rubber flooring—an ideal surface for a gym environment thanks to its slip resistance, durability, and noise-reducing properties.

Lighting, Power & Finishes

The electrics were designed around the planned gym layout, with four double sockets installed exactly where the client needed them, plus six internal LED downlights. A 1.5kW radiator ensures the space is warm year-round, with the system connected neatly to the existing garage supply.

Externally, four downlights are recessed into the roof canopy, casting a soft wash of light across the front elevation. Up/down lights have been positioned on either side of the doors, accentuating the angled wall and bringing out the natural beauty of the Cedar cladding—particularly striking at night.

High-Quality Materials

The exterior is finished in top-grade Western Red Cedar on all sides, known for its rich colouring and durability. Crusoe use a clear grade timber, free of knots, which gives a refined appearance and long-term performance. The natural tones of the cladding work beautifully with the Anthracite Grey aluminium-framed doors, windows and roof trims, creating a contemporary look that will weather gracefully.

Built On Site in Just 10 Days

As with all of their builds, Crusoe constructed this garden gym from scratch on site. Their experienced team completed the entire build in just 10 days—an impressive turnaround for a fully bespoke building finished to such a high standard.
