Garden annexe show sites: where to see an annexe in person
Floor plans and photographs only go so far. Standing inside a finished annexe tells you how big the rooms feel, how much light comes in and how well it is finished, and it is the best way to compare companies. These are the annexe specialists with an annexe on display, and how to arrange a visit.

Seeing an annexe a company has already built
Most annexe specialists do not have a show site, but many can arrange for you to see an annexe they have built for a past customer, with the owner’s agreement.
It is often more useful than a show unit: you see a lived-in building in a real garden, and you can ask the owner how the project went. Ask about it in your first conversation with any company you are considering.
What to look at when you visit
Go with your own plan in mind, and use the visit to test it.
- The rooms against your plan. Take the measurements of the space you have in mind, and compare them with the bedroom, the living area and the bathroom you are standing in.
- Access. Look at the threshold at the door, the width of the doorways and the shower, especially if the annexe is for an older relative.
- Light and height. See how the glazing lights the room, and check the ceiling height inside.
- Sound and warmth. Notice how quiet it is with the doors shut, and ask about insulation and heating.
- The finish. Look at the kitchen, the bathroom and the joins between materials.
- The standard. Ask whether the building is made to Building Regulations or to BS3632, the residential mobile home standard, and which planning route it would go through on your site.
