This 6.6m x 7m garden annexe, designed by A Room in the Garden, provides independent, accessible living. The one-bedroom home features an open-plan layout, with only one wall dividing the kitchen from the shower room.
A Room in the Garden specialises in creating tailor-made garden homes for their clients. Each design is customised to the owner's specific requirements and incorporates features that reflect their style and personality.
A Garden Annexe with Character
As seen in these photos, this garden annexe has plenty of character and style. A key part of A Room in the Garden’s design brief was to incorporate elements that reflect the client’s personality.
One way they achieved this was by installing a large stained glass window in the wall between the kitchen and bathroom. This colourful feature nods to the client’s previous home, which had stained glass windows.
The crisp white plastered walls and ceilings provide a blank canvas for the owner to personalise with colourful furniture. The clever arrangement of furniture defines the living areas while maintaining the spacious, open feel of the annexe, allowing for easy movement between spaces.
Accessible Shower Room
The shower room in this annexe is impressively designed to be fully accessible.
Like the rest of the annexe, the shower room has an open-plan layout, but its position ensures privacy for the user.
An extra-large shower cubicle, complete with a bench seat and two glass screens, has been installed. The shower room also includes a standard toilet and vanity unit to complete the space.
A Room in the Garden took care of all the groundwork, connecting the annexe to the mains services as part of their full service. Not all companies offer this, often leaving the client to arrange these connections separately.
Low-Maintenance Exterior
The exterior of the annexe has as much personality as the interior. A Room in the Garden has used black corrugated metal cladding for the walls, a durable and low-maintenance choice. The corrugated profile adds texture and visual interest to the building.
The black corrugated cladding is complemented by black uPVC doors and windows. Finishing both the cladding and window frames in one colour is highly effective, as shown in the photos. Scandinavian Redwood has been used to trim the roof canopy on the front elevation. The natural colour and texture of the wood contrast nicely with the black finishes, adding warmth to the design.
