A 6m x 4m garden music room by Crusoe Garden Rooms, this structure has been tailored to meet the demanding acoustic needs of professional musicians. Designed in collaboration with the clients, it balances function with form and ensures an optimal sound environment for professionals.
Crusoe Garden Rooms offers various designs adaptable to individual client needs, including options for acoustic enhancements and custom layouts. This particular project in Twickenham, London, is based on the Crusoe Classic, offering a generous 6m width and 4m depth—ideal for use as a studio space with ample room for instruments and recording equipment.
Enhanced Acoustic Insulation
While Crusoe's garden rooms are well specified, they go the extra mile for clients seeking acoustic insulation, drawing on their understanding of musicians’ specific requirements. For this build, they incorporated acoustic insulation into the layered core structure and opted for soundbloc plasterboard, a step up from standard plasterboard, to reduce sound transmission and enhance the room’s overall sound quality.
A Fusion of Cladding Options
The Crusoe Classic model is typically clad in Cedar on all sides, but Crusoe also offers the Fusion option, which allows a mix of Cedar and coloured plywood panels for a personalised look. This can be a cost-effective choice while providing an aesthetic edge. For this project, the front and one side were clad in Cedar, while the other two sides used durable, Anthracite Grey plywood panels, harmonising with the uPVC frames of the doors and windows.
Welcoming Entrance
This garden music room is designed to feel inviting, with a large four-pane glazed door system along the front, providing expansive views and an indoor-outdoor feel. The sliding doors open at the centre, enhancing natural light and ventilation, ideal for both performances and relaxation.
A 1m-deep deck and roof canopy extend across the front elevation. The deck features low-maintenance, grey composite decking, which resists rot and stays slip-free, while the canopy is fitted with exterior-grade downlights to illuminate the space after dark.
A tall window on the Cedar-clad side wall offers additional ventilation and light, with an opening top section to allow fresh air inside without compromising soundproofing.
Well-Specified Interior
Inside, the garden music room has a professionally finished interior. The soundbloc plasterboard walls have been plastered and painted to the client's preference, creating an ideal backdrop for a studio or rehearsal space. Laminate flooring, the colour chosen by the client, adds durability and style.
The music room includes a well-specifed electrical setup, with ten ceiling downlights and ample power sockets featuring brushed chrome fittings. External lighting includes two up/downlights flanking the doorway, along with an outdoor power socket for added convenience.
Insulated for all-season use, the room is comfortable year-round. A 2kW electric radiator provides supplementary heating for the coldest days. Additionally, a CAT6 data cable runs from the house to the studio, ensuring a stable internet connection—a must for streaming or remote collaboration.
Built with Minimal Disruption
Crusoe Garden Rooms constructs their buildings with care, working on-site in a way to minimise the impact on the surrounding garden. This build, which includes twenty groundscrews for the foundation, took just two and a half weeks from start to finish, making it a seamless addition to the garden.
