Garden Room for All the Family

Garden rooms are not limited to one specific use, such as a home office. They can be designed as spaces for the whole family to enjoy, either together or separately.
This great project by Kent-based Ark Design Build is an excellent example of a garden room designed for all the family. It will act as a family television and games room at times, a teenager’s den sometimes, and a retreat for adults to escape daily life.
This multifunctional family room features an interesting layout with a twist on an L-shape configuration. The overall footprint is just under 30 sqm.
The large main room has two smaller rooms leading off it. The detailing around the bi-fold doors is particularly appealing. The Ark team brought this wall forward, allowing for a side window that creates a wraparound glazing effect.
Garden Room with Shower Room
There’s no need to return to the house when you need to use the bathroom, thanks to the inclusion of a shower room. The well-specified shower room sits in one 'wing' leading off the main room.
As part of their turnkey service, Ark Design Build fitted out the shower room, right down to hanging the plants. This service included all the groundworks needed to connect the shower room to the mains for water and waste. Not all garden room companies offering toilets or shower rooms include this hookup, leaving you with the task of organising it with another provider. It's easier to work with a company like Ark Design Build, who handle the entire project and leave you with a building ready to use.
Useful Storage Room
The 'wing' at the front of the building houses a useful storage room. Instead of a plastered and decorated finish like the main room and shower room, the storage area has been lined with OSB. OSB is practical and highly durable, ideal for storage spaces.
The Ark team customised the storage room with shelving to suit their customer's needs.
Sliding Feature Window
Behind the garden room is a raised section of the garden. To enjoy this view, the Ark Design Build team incorporated a feature window.
The window uses a sliding system, which isn’t commonly seen in garden room design but is an excellent choice!
Like sliding doors, sliding windows have two or more panels that can be slid to one side, opening up a large expanse of glazing. Sliding windows create a striking feature in the room.
Completed Down to the Final Touches
Ark Design Build aims to leave you with a room that’s ready to use straight away. They will even hang TVs and shelves for you. In this project, the finishing touches included hanging feature wallpaper, fitting a wood burner in the main room, and hanging plants in the shower room. Few companies go to such lengths.
