Garden Spaces are specialists in acoustic garden room specifications, tailoring each building around the client to achieve the desired level of soundproofing. This project in St Leonards-on-Sea is an excellent example of how their team collaborates closely with clients to balance performance, design, and budget.
Tailored Acoustic Design
The brief was to create a professional-grade performance and control room within a compact footprint. The client wanted acoustic isolation between the two rooms while maintaining a visual connection. Garden Spaces achieved this by incorporating double-skinned sound-lock doors and viewing windows, each fitted with acoustic seals that significantly reduce sound transfer. Every detail was considered — from acoustic plasterboard layers and membranes to the use of surface-mounted electrics that preserve the integrity of the internal acoustic envelope.
The performance room is equipped with a super-quiet air conditioning system and high-performance acoustic vents that achieve up to 55 dB noise reduction while maintaining fresh airflow. These vents are built discreetly into the wall system — an example of the meticulous detailing that defines Garden Spaces’ acoustic builds.
Foundations for a Challenging Site
The plot presented a challenge, with areas of concrete and embedded stone from previous structures. Rather than excavating at high cost, Garden Spaces designed a ground-screw foundation system that bridges the existing debris, creating a solid, level base for the SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) structure. This practical solution maintained the project’s budget without compromising stability or performance.
Dual-Room Layout
Internally, the layout divides into two functional spaces — a performance room and a control room. The partition wall between them includes a double-skinned acoustic viewing window system, designed with sound-locking seals to minimise sound transfer between the two rooms. The control room features a mix of glazing, including a slot window set high in the side wall for light and ventilation, and a glazed entrance door flanked by full-height windows with integrated venetian blinds.
Thermowood and Cement Particle Board Exterior
Externally, the building combines Thermowood cladding with cement particle board, creating a durable, cohesive finish. The Thermowood has been fitted vertically to emphasise the building’s contemporary form and wraps neatly around the front canopy, which is inset with LED downlights to highlight the entrance.
Cement particle board is a low-maintenance, dimensionally stable material that isn’t susceptible to rot or decay, making it an ideal choice for non-prominent elevations where cost efficiency and durability are key. The boards are painted in the same RAL colour as the doors, windows, and trims, ensuring a unified look.
A set of custom steps, detailed in matching finishes and topped with composite decking, provides easy access to the studio across the gently sloping ground.
Platinum Acoustic Package
This project features Garden Spaces’ Platinum Acoustic Package, their highest-performance specification:
- Walls: Multi-layer build with SIP core, resilient bars, acoustic mineral wool, rubber de-couplers, and double plasterboard lining (approx. 56 dB RW).
- Ceiling: Acoustic rubber membrane, resilient bars, and acoustic plasterboard (approx. 48 dB RW).
- Floor: SIP base with three-layer acoustic underlay and engineered or laminate finish.
These layers, combined with expert sealing, provide impressive acoustic performance suitable for music production, performance, and recording applications.
Real-World Performance
The finished studio delivers excellent isolation. In an acoustic test video shared by the team, the sound level difference between the live room, control room, and outside space is striking — proof of how effectively the Garden Spaces system performs in practice.
