When people think of garden annexe living, they often associate it with compact spaces, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Garden living annexes come in a wide range of sizes, from cosy rooms comparable to a comfortable bedroom, to more spacious buildings that can be divided into multiple rooms. There’s a simple design choice that can significantly enhance the sense of space, making the rooms feel light and airy.
The key design choice? Opting for a pitched roofline instead of the more common mono-pitched roofline. This choice creates a vaulted ceiling, dramatically increasing the room's volume and opening up the space. Garden Annexes offers both mono-pitched and pitched roof garden homes. This example from their St George range demonstrates how a pitched roofline creates a vaulted ceiling, resulting in an interior that feels wonderfully light and airy. The added height from the vaulted ceiling amplifies the room's spaciousness, making it feel much larger than it actually is.
The vaulted ceiling, along with exposed roof trusses, adds a stylish and distinctive character to the space. Natural light is beautifully reflected throughout the room, enhancing the overall ambience. Garden Annexes offers various glazing options, allowing you to customise your window and door layout to frame the perfect views of your garden. In this particular example, the owners chose floor-to-ceiling windows along the front elevation, creating a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces.
Externally, Garden Annexes tiles their pitched roofs, adding to the design's aesthetic appeal. The St George range is well-proportioned, and there are numerous options to personalise your building, including the external colour palette. In this case, a soft grey was chosen, blending harmoniously with the natural hues of the surrounding garden.
This particular garden annexe is an example of the St George 945 model.
Garden Annexes also offers another range of pitched roof garden annexes, called the Ivyo. The Ivyo 745 model, shown here, shares a similar colour palette with the St. George project but features exterior walls with a horizontal grooved profile, offering a different visual texture.
