Small Acoustic Music Room by Garden Spaces

Small Acoustic Music Room by Garden Spaces

Published: 21 August 2026
Reading Time: 3 minutes 20 seconds

Working with a garden room company that offers a bespoke design service means the building can be the size you require. This 3.48m x 3.25m soundproof music studio by Garden Spaces is an example of a specific size that maximises the space, at the end of a long narrow garden in Chesham, on ground that slopes.

It still carries their Platinum acoustic package and their signature acoustic porch. It showcases that even with a relatively small garden music room, you don't have to compromise on acoustic performance and features.

A Long Narrow Garden and Sloping Ground

The building fills the end of the garden, and an existing tree in front of it has been left undisturbed.

The slope was the more awkward constraint. Garden Spaces use ground screw foundations, which deal with sloping ground by being wound to different depths rather than by levelling the site, and the level difference is picked up in two steps finished in composite decking. As part of the project Garden Spaces moved the client's existing shed further down the garden onto a ground screw base of its own.

The Acoustic Porch

The acoustic porch is a Garden Spaces signature detail, and it adds to the sound isolation levels. The outer door, on the face of the porch, is glazed with acoustic glass. Behind it is a solid fire door with acoustic seals. The small lobby between them is what does the work: two doors with air between them are far harder for sound to pass through than any single door and its seal.

It gives the owner two ways of working, too. When they are not recording, either door can be left open. When they are, both are shut.

Light and Air Into a Sealed Room

Glazing is the leaky element in an acoustic build, so it is normally kept to a minimum, which produces a room that performs well and is not much fun to sit in.

Garden Spaces' solution is back-to-back windows: two fixed units, one in the outer wall and one in the inner, giving a double skin of acoustic glazing with a cavity between. They sit at desk height, 1200mm wide, looking back down the garden towards the house.

Ventilation has the same problem to solve. You cannot simply open a window in a room built to hold sound in, so air comes and goes through acoustic vents, which take it along a longer path lined with sound-absorbing material rather than straight through the wall. Heating and cooling come from an air conditioning system chosen for its low running noise.

Thermowood at the Front, Cement Board to the Boundaries

Three of the four elevations run boundary to boundary, so they are clad in cement particle board: no rot, no fungal attack, and no maintenance on walls that are difficult to reach once the building is in. They are finished in the same anthracite grey as the doors, windows and trims.

The front elevation, facing the house, is Thermowood fitted vertically. Thermowood is softwood that is heat-treated at high temperature instead of chemically treated, leaving timber that is far more stable and rot-resistant than untreated softwood. It darkens to a warm brown in the process, which is where this elevation gets its colour and character.

Surface-Mounted Electrics and a One-Stop Service

The electrics are surface-mounted so they do not puncture the acoustic layers. Their positions were worked out with the owner in advance based on how they plan to use the room.

Walls and ceiling are plastered and decorated, and the floor is laid in laminate. Garden Spaces run the whole project from design through to the final connections, handing over a studio ready to use.
