As families grow, many of us find our homes becoming cramped. However, our gardens often offer untapped potential for creating additional living space. This opportunity has driven the popularity of garden rooms, enabling homeowners to add versatile, cost-effective extensions without the disruption of traditional building work.
This example comes from a Garden Spaces project in Oxfordshire, where a family transformed their garden into a multifunctional space. The design features a 6.4m x 4.4m garden room, complete with a spacious deck, en-suite shower room, and integrated storage area.
A Custom Design for Family Living
The family envisioned a flexible room for shared use, which led to the creation of a tailored layout:
- Main Room: A 4.17m x 3.58m living space with modern finishes.
- En-Suite Shower Room: A compact yet functional 1.78m x 1.83m area.
- Storage Area: Measuring 1.78m x 2.16m, accessible via a concealed exterior door.
The room’s design reflects Garden Spaces’ expertise in crafting garden rooms that suit specific requirements, making it an ideal solution for a growing family.
The Main Family Room
The main room combines comfort and contemporary aesthetics. It features a plastered, decorated finish with laminate wood flooring that mimics real wood, complete with wide planks and bevelled edges.
Natural light floods the room through bi-fold doors spanning the front elevation. When fully opened, these doors fold neatly into a recessed area, blending the indoor and outdoor spaces. Additional ventilation and light are provided by a rectangular opening window on the rear wall.
The En-Suite Shower Room
Despite its compact size, the en-suite is fully equipped:
- A 900mm x 900mm shower with corner screens.
- A toilet integrated into a sleek vanity unit for a streamlined appearance.
- A compact vanity basin opposite the toilet, also housed in a vanity unit for practicality.
- A fanlight window above the toilet provides natural light and ventilation, an essential feature often overlooked.
The Storage Room
Designed for practicality, the storage area is finished with durable SIP panels, making it perfect for housing bikes, garden tools, and more. The garden room’s consumer unit is discreetly located here, keeping the main room clutter-free.
Well-Specified Electrical Package
This garden room includes a comprehensive electrical setup:
- Lighting: Eight internal and four external dimmable LED downlights, plus a practical strip light in the storage room.
- Power: Eight double sockets in the main room, an external socket for garden tools, and a thermostatically controlled convector heater with a programmable timer.
- Heating: A chrome towel rail adds comfort to the en-suite.
Year-Round Enjoyment
This project demonstrates how a thoughtfully designed garden room can create additional living space for the whole family to enjoy throughout the year. With features tailored to their needs, the Oxfordshire family gained a stylish, practical solution that enhances their home and lifestyle.
