Composite Wood Cladding in Charcoal: Three Modern Garden Rooms Projects

Cladding is one of the first decisions a buyer makes when specifying a garden room, as it has the biggest impact on how the building looks and how much maintenance it will require. As a buyer today you have a lot of choice in terms of the material, profile and colour. One of the most popular options is composite wood, because it doesn't rot in the way timber can and it maintains its appearance long term without requiring much maintenance.
Composite is one of several cladding finishes available across the Modern Garden Rooms ranges. Three recent projects shared on their Instagram have all landed on the same one: Charcoal composite, carried across the cladding and the decking, with the door and window frames colour matched to it.
Using a single colour for every part of the exterior is a simple decision that does a lot of work. With no change of colour to draw the eye, the building reads as one stylish form because of its simplicity.
One Colour, Three Different Elements
The composite boards, the decking in front of them and the uPVC frames around the doors and windows are all the same charcoal. The deck reads as part of the building rather than a separate platform, and the frames sit quietly in the wall instead of outlining every opening in a contrasting colour.
Using the same colour across all the exterior finishes is very effective, as these Modern Garden Rooms projects show, but it also takes an element of bravery as it breaks the mould. It is a bolder choice than we usually see.
It's a combination of exterior finishes that ages well as a set. Composite cladding holds its colour rather than weathering towards silver-grey as timber claddings naturally do, and the decking and frames are doing the same thing alongside it, so these garden rooms will look the same in a few years' time as they do in the photos taken at handover.
Low Maintenance Across the Whole Exterior
The cladding is only part of it. The decking here is composite too, so it asks no more of an owner than the boards on the wall do, and the uPVC doors and windows need nothing beyond a clean now and then. Nothing on the outside of these buildings wants oiling or staining every year or two the way natural timber does.
These low-maintenance composite finishes are just one layer of the build. On a Modern Garden Rooms building the cladding is the outer weather layer of a multi-layer insulated wall, with a plastered interior behind it.
Where the Detailing Shows
Composite is less forgiving than timber. Every junction has to be set out properly, and poor detailing shows up quickly at the points where two runs meet.
These three projects show that the Modern Garden Rooms team know what they are doing when using it. The boards are fitted vertically, which emphasises the contemporary lines of the buildings, and the intersections are the part to look at: the corners, and the junction where the cladding meets the roofline, are all cleanly and carefully detailed.
Showcased on Different Ranges
The same finish turns up across different Modern Garden Rooms ranges. Two of these projects are from the Canopy range and one is a Cube, and the size and configuration of the doors and windows has been tailored to each client.
The Canopy takes its name from the roof projecting out over the deck, with downlights set into the underside of it, so there is shelter at the doors and light at the entrance after dark. The Cube is the squarer of the two, and a great example of this popular boxy form.
