An L-Shaped SIP Garage for a Collection of Luxury Cars by SIPS Garden Rooms

Garden rooms built on a multi-layer SIP core get ordered for all manner of uses, and one of the more common requests is a well-specified, fully insulated garage. Over the years the Guide has featured insulated garages used as workshops, and as showroom storage for luxury motorbikes and favourite bicycles. This Bromsgrove project by SIPS Garden Rooms is the largest example we have seen: an L-shaped building designed to house a collection of luxury cars.
SIPS Garden Rooms designed and supplied the project as a weathertight shell, with the planning application, Building Control and project management handled alongside. The interior was left for the owners' own contractors to fit out, and they have created a high-spec showroom aesthetic that lets the cars do the talking.
An L-Shape Around an Established Tree
The plan is an L, with the two wings meeting at an inside corner where an established tree stands. Rather than clearing the tree, the building wraps around it, so the garden keeps its mature canopy and the garage gains a sheltered courtyard in the crook of the L. The shape also makes the most of the plot, running the building along two sides of the garden instead of one.
Both wings are clad in vertical cedar boards under a flat roof with a deep anthracite fascia, and the glazing frames are anthracite to match.
Three Sets of Bi-Fold Doors
Three sets of bi-fold doors face the garden: one on the short wing, one along the long wing, and a third on the return at its end. They fold to the side to open large expanses of the wall, which makes moving the cars in and out straightforward and is the reason bi-folds were chosen over a conventional garage door.
Closed, the glazing frames views of the cars from the garden, and possibly from the house. Inside it works the other way, and the garage has a connection with the garden that a standard garage never gets. In the evening, with the lights on, the whole interior is visible from across the lawn.
A Fire-Protected SIP Shell
The structure is a full SIP envelope, structural insulated panels for the walls and roof, which gives the building the thermal stability that storing high-value vehicles calls for. The envelope incorporates A1 non-combustible Rescom BP boards for passive fire protection, a sensible specification for a building holding several cars.
SIPS Garden Rooms submitted the planning application before construction started and coordinated Building Control through the LABC Partnership scheme, managing the supply chain and the build programme through to a watertight structure.
A Showroom Interior by the Owners' Own Trades
Inside, the contractors have fitted out the shell as a showroom rather than a garage. The floor is a seamless grey finish with a soft sheen, the walls are a pale grey and the ceiling is dark, with recessed lines of LED light running across the ceiling and continuing down the walls to the floor, so each bay is framed by light.
