A garden office, craft studio and sitting room in Troon by Designer Garden Rooms
Designer Garden Rooms, a Scottish company based in Troon, Ayrshire, built this medium-sized garden room for a client in the town. It works as a home office, a craft studio and a garden sitting room, with the furniture doing the dividing.
Designer Garden Rooms are a Scottish company, based in Troon on the Ayrshire coast, and this garden room was built for a client in the town. It’s a medium-sized room that’s serving multiple uses. It works as a comfortable home office, a craft studio and a garden sitting room.
The room sits at the end of the lawn, on a gravel strip beside the garden shed and well away from the house, which gives some privacy for working from home.

Three uses, one room
The owners have done one of the cleverest arrangements of furniture that we’ve seen to define their different uses while still having the room work as a whole. There are no internal walls. Each part of the room is set out by what stands in it.
The office is at the far end, with the desk under the window and bookcases behind it creating a sort of library area.
A storage wall then comes out into the room as a divider, creating space and storage for the craft work.
A sitting room looking out to the garden
On the other side of the storage wall, they’ve created a comfortable seating area with a pair of armchairs and a chest of drawers, looking out through the sliding doors into the garden.
The room is plastered and decorated, with an oak-effect floor, downlights and an electric panel heater.
Cement board with a wood-grain texture
The building is clad in Hardie Plank, a fibre-cement board from James Hardie, laid horizontally, with an attractive wood-grain texture. The colour is Khaki Brown, a warm, light shade that contrasts well with the anthracite grey doors, windows, fascia and soffit.
The exterior finishes, from the cement board cladding to the anthracite doors, windows, fascia and soffit, will all require little maintenance. That is an important consideration when buying a garden room, particularly in Scotland, where the weather is harsher.
A joiner’s finish
You can tell from the detailing of the finishes that Designer Garden Rooms are a team of joiners. The flat roof overhangs the walls, and its underside is lined in anthracite boards rather than left as a plain sheet, so the soffit is finished as carefully as the walls.
The corners are closed with trims in the same colour as the cladding, so the boards turn the corner without a visible join, and the fascia runs as one clean line around the roof edge. The windows and sliding doors sit neatly into the boards, with nothing added to cover the junction.
