Garden room creates a community hub
A 9.6m × 4.8m building for a charity, 2.8m tall, with a kitchen, a cloakroom and a deck shaped around the trees.
While most garden rooms built each year are in people’s back gardens, some companies also offer design services for more commercial projects, creating multifunctional spaces for businesses, charities, and care homes.
Ark Design Build offers a commercial garden room design service in Kent, East Sussex, and parts of Essex. They recently created this building for a charity, which has become a multifunctional community hub for its members.

Multi-functional space for a charity
This 9.6m x 4.8m garden room is a bespoke design tailored to the charity’s specific needs. At 2.8m tall, it is higher than the average garden room. Ark Design Build obtained permission for this taller building on their client’s behalf as part of their turnkey service.
The charity wanted a building that could serve multiple purposes. When restrictions allow, it will be used for gatherings and classes. We hear the charity will use the large deck for outdoor yoga sessions-ideal in the tree-lined setting.

Includes a kitchen and cloakroom
Inside, the building has been divided to create a toilet and kitchen. The Ark Design Build team fitted out the bathroom and installed the kitchen as part of their turnkey service. This included all necessary groundworks, connections to the mains services, and having the work signed off by the Building Control Inspector.
The interior of the building has a high-spec plastered and decorated finish. The room will be naturally light thanks to the mix of bi-fold doors and tall windows.
Unique glazed corner configuration
We like the corner glazing feature in this project. We haven’t seen a collection of narrow glimpse windows spaced like this before, creating a unique glazed corner.
Finished with Thermowood
The exterior of the building features low-maintenance finishes. Ark Design Build uses powder-coated aluminium-framed doors and windows, which will stand the test of time without needing maintenance.
The external cladding is Thermowood, which has a lovely honey-brown colour and attractive knot pattern.
Thermowood is a softwood treated at a very high temperature, causing structural changes that increase its durability.
Thermowood can be left untreated, and over time it will weather to a silvery-grey colour. This change does not affect the durability of the cladding, only its appearance.
