Annexe project · Norwegian Log

Log cabin home

Wendy and Wayne lived five miles apart — she in the family home, he in a static caravan on the land where they run a storage business. A four-bedroom timber cabin put them back under one roof.

Norwegian Log cabin homes have a special way of bringing families closer together. We’ve previously discussed how a Norwegian Log cabin allowed two generations of a family to live together while still maintaining their own space and independence.

In this case, another family has been reunited through the creation of a four-bedroom log cabin. The family had been living apart due to work commitments.

Before building their cabin home, Wendy and Wayne were living five miles apart. Wendy lived in the family home with their two children, while Wayne stayed in a static caravan on the land where they run a secure storage business.

It had always been Wayne’s vision to build a house on their land. While the children were young, they couldn’t afford to pursue this dream. However, as the children grew up, Wendy and Wayne revisited the idea of building on the land.

They realised that obtaining planning permission for a brick-built house would be difficult, so they turned to timber construction. Norwegian Log’s designs caught their attention.

After reviewing Norwegian Log’s brochure, the couple visited their Reading show site to see the homes in person. Following this visit, the Norwegian Log team visited their land for a site survey.

During the visit, the Norwegian Log team advised them on the planning situation. Norwegian Log homes are transportable and built under the Caravan Act. Since Wayne had been living on-site for many years in a static caravan, the four-bedroom cabin could proceed with a Certificate of Lawful Use.

They were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble. We didn’t feel obliged to buy, and there was no pressure. They gave us all the options but didn’t push us.”

At a glance

  • Rooms: four bedrooms, the master with an en-suite shower room, and a family bathroom with both a shower and a full-sized bath.
  • The route: a brick house would have been hard to get permission for. Norwegian Log homes are transportable and built under the Caravan Act, and Wayne had already lived on the land for years in a static caravan.
  • The plan: Wendy drew the floor plan herself in free software; she would phone through changes and the company redrew and sent new versions.
  • Living space: a high-gloss grey kitchen, and a large living room with a wood burner and bi-fold doors onto a veranda over the garden.
  • One room kept back: a bedroom turned into a sewing room, with storage for materials and tools and a long window over the work table.

Flexible interior layout

Wendy had clear ideas for the interior layout of their new home. She drafted some plans for the arrangement of the rooms and was impressed by how flexible and accommodating the Norwegian Log team were.

I found some free software as I wanted to design the floor plan myself, which wasn’t an issue for Norwegian Log. They were brilliant. I’d call them with changes, and they’d update the plans and send new versions.”

The cabin features four bedrooms. The master bedroom includes a luxurious en-suite shower room, while the family bathroom has both a shower and a full-sized bath.

The kitchen

As seen in the photos, the high-gloss grey kitchen is impressive, and the large living room, complete with a wood burner, has bi-fold doors that open onto a veranda overlooking the garden.

One bedroom has been converted into a sewing room for Wendy, who is an enthusiastic embroiderer. She has equipped the space with storage for all her materials and tools. The large rectangular window over her work table ensures the room is filled with natural light, making it an ideal workspace.

Visitors walk into our new home and say ‘oh wow’!

It’s easy to see why this is their reaction. Wendy, Wayne, and the Norwegian Log team have created a beautiful and welcoming log cabin home.
