6ft Deep Garden Studio with Storage Shed

This project by Ark Design Build demonstrates how, with careful planning and thoughtful design, a highly functional garden studio can be created, even in the smallest gardens.
Ark Design Build’s customer wanted a jewellery studio for her business. With limited space in the garden, she also requested that the new building include a storage room, avoiding the need for a separate shed.
To make the most of the available space, Ark Design Build designed a bespoke garden studio and storage building measuring 4m (13ft 1in) wide by 1.8m (6ft) deep. This is one of the narrowest garden studio and storage combinations we have seen in recent years!
Fully Insulated Garden Studio
The garden studio is fully insulated and designed for comfortable use throughout the year. The jewellery studio section features a plastered and decorated interior, complemented by a wooden floor, creating a light and modern workspace.
The studio includes brushed steel switches and sockets, with a high electrical specification. This includes LED lighting, an external light, and data cabling, all part of the standard service Ark Design Build provides. The electrical connection is handled as part of their overall service, which sets them apart from many companies.
Natural light is provided by a picture window on the end wall, positioned at bench height, ideal for working. On the front wall, a single outward-opening glazed door leads into the studio.
Secret Storage Shed
Next to the workroom is a discreet storage shed. The door is on the front elevation, but thanks to the use of the same Thermowood cladding, it blends seamlessly with the studio’s exterior.
Thermowood is a durable cladding option, offering a similar low-maintenance lifespan to Western Red Cedar, though it’s more affordable. While it begins as a rich brown, over time it will weather to a mellow silver-grey.
A 1200mm-wide decked area was added in front of the workroom door, seamlessly integrating with an existing decking area.
