You don’t require a lot of space to create a functional art studio, as this pottery studio by AMC Garden Rooms proves. Sitting on a modest footprint of 2m x 1.5m, it is an example of their Garden Pod range.
The way AMC Garden Rooms and their client have incorporated glazing into the design makes the studio feel much bigger than it is.
French doors have been positioned on the 1.5m wall. Often you will see a single door used on this size building. So, the French doors are a clever choice in that the double doors let in lots of light, and once open, they add a lovely indoor-outdoor feeling to the workspace. The picture window is also a clever choice, and bigger than you’ll typically find in this sized garden room. It frames a view of the pretty courtyard garden and floods the room with natural light. In addition, the owner can easily push this top-hung window open to ventilate the space.
As we can see, a wonderfully light workspace has been created. The French door and picture window allow lots of natural working light to enter the studio. The light bounces off the crisp white walls.
The house-quality double-glazed doors and windows and insulated multi-layer build-up in the floor, walls and roof mean the studio will be a comfortable place to work all year round. As part of the electrical specification, AMC Garden Rooms fitted an electric wall heater.
A living roof means the pod looks equally good from above
The garden studio pod has been built in a city centre courtyard garden. The appearance of the studio pod, when viewed from above, was important. The owner lives in a three-story house, and a terraced area would look down on the building. So, a living roof covering was chosen.
As we can see, the sedum roof covering softens the roof and is much more aesthetically pleasing than a standard grey/black EPDM would be. The sedum plants offer interest all year round and require little maintenance.
Adding a living roof covering to a garden studio helps absorb moisture, adds a layer of thermal and acoustic insulation, and provides an ecosystem of insects for birds to eat.
The exterior of the studio pod has been clad in Western Red Cedar. This is a popular, low-maintenance, long-lasting choice. AMC Garden Rooms offers various exterior cladding finishes, including maintenance-free composite options.
