Black is the new Cedar

When it comes to garden rooms – black is the new cedar!

Early garden rooms were all painted in pastel shades, as the industry progressed Western Red Cedar became the most popular form of exterior cladding, but over the last year or so we have seen a new trend – the black garden room.

Cedar cladding became very popular because it requires little ongoing maintenance, and because buildings clad with it have a contemporary style.

Cedar starts off a reddish brown colour, but will weather to silver grey in as little as a year – depending on the weather! Some people feel this grey colour makes their garden room look ‘old’!

The black finishes used by garden room suppliers are very durable and require little ongoing maintenance, in fact many suppliers use cedar as the cladding and then stain each board black so you have the durability of the cedar, but can be assured a stable finished colour, meaning your room will look as crisp in five years as it does on day one.

Black cladding looks good on both traditional and contemporary style garden rooms. Black cladding is of course a traditional finish on barns, but it looks great in both urban and rural settings, and forms a great back drop for planting in your garden.

You will see in this guide a number of different black clad garden rooms, we hope they inspire you to choose a black garden room!
