Steeply Sloping Plot Overcome With a Modern Garden Room

Steeply Sloping Plot Overcome With a Modern Garden Room

Published: 13 December 2025
Reading Time: 1 minute 50 seconds

Some gardens present more challenges than others, but Modern Garden Rooms are experienced hands when it comes to overcoming sloping ground, tight access and working close to boundaries. This bespoke Canopy range building shows how thoughtful design and structural expertise can transform an otherwise difficult corner of the garden into a highly practical and stylish room.

This plot sits on steeply sloping ground next to a wall, yet the team approached it with confidence. Their use of pile foundations is key; piles make it straightforward to create a level and stable base despite significant changes in ground level. From this starting point, clever detailing has shaped a room that can be comfortably used year-round, with a lovely connection to the garden thanks to the generous mix of glazing.

A Welcoming Entrance and Garden Views

A bespoke set of steps leads up to a decked platform, where sliding doors open into the 8m x 3.2m room. Two floor-to-ceiling windows, each comprising three panes, have been positioned to maximise natural light, and we imagine they frame a lovely view of the garden beyond.

Modern Garden Rooms have extended the Western Red Cedar cladding down over the pile foundations so they are hidden from view. Each board has been carefully cut to follow the natural undulations of the ground, ensuring there are no gaps and giving the building a well-finished appearance of a Modern Garden Room.

Canopy Detail and Low-Maintenance Finishes

As the Canopy range name suggests, a 750mm deep canopy spans the width of the building. Exterior-grade downlights are set into the underside, casting a gentle wash of light across the front elevation in the evening.

Where the building sits close to the boundary, the hidden elevations have been finished in corrugated metal cladding. Its specialist coating means it requires no ongoing maintenance, making it the ideal choice for areas that will be difficult to access once the building is complete.
