Traditionally a moveable shelter for a shepherd tending his flock, the shepherds hut has evolved into a modern comfortable space for use as a home office, artists studio or simply a place to hide!
Court & Hunt are specialists in creating traditional design shepherds huts, using modern materials to create a comfortable room designed for year round use.
So, how did Court & Hunt start buildings shepherd’s huts? David Hunt explains:
“The first Shepherd’s hut I built was as a “one off” for a client I was doing some other joinery work for. The initial brief was just for a “Shepherd’s hut” – to be built to look as authentic as possible but, built using modern, ecologically friendly materials. After quite a lot of research on Shepherd’s huts in various museums and hedges we settled on a design. Just as the hut was nearing completion, a husband and wife walking past my workshop popped in and asked to see what I was building – a couple of weeks later they came back and asked for one for themselves. I’ve been building Shepherd’s full time for just over three years now for clients all over the country and a couple in Europe.
Most clients want a space to use as an escape or a small home office away from the hurly burly of the modern world. I was asked by one client to build him a hut to go in his vineyard – somewhere to sit and rest while he was working with the hut to include a shower room to freshen up in at the end of a hard day. Because I hand build each hut to order I can include pretty much anything a client wants – just as long as I can work out a way to make things fit – a fully functioning shower room and toilet in a Shepherd’s hut in the midst of a vineyard took quite a bit of working out!
The majority of clients want a simple, timeless retreat free of signs of the modern world. When you climb the steps into one of my Shepherd’s huts, you really do feel you are entering another, slower, more restful age, a very important thing these days!”
A Court & Hunt is an environmentally friendly garden room, the chassis and framework is built using FSC certified timber, and the wheels are made from recycled cast iron. The shepherd’s huts external cladding is galvanised corrugated steel which is hard wearing and long lasting. But perhaps the most interesting eco feature is the use of Ecowool insulation which is made from 85% recycled plastic bottles, Ecowool is a high performance insulation and totally recyclable at the end of its life.
The interior of the shepherds hut is finished in a shaker style with tongue & groove panelling on the walls and ceiling and character oak flooring.
A standard shepherds hut is 3.8m long x 2.25m wide and 3m high and costs £8,850 plus VAT. Typically shepherds huts take six weeks to build and can be delivered throughout the UK.
