Render: A Smart Finish, and a Low-Maintenance One for Garden Rooms

Render: A Smart Finish, and a Low-Maintenance One for Garden Rooms

Published: 18 July 2026
Reading Time: 2 minutes 50 seconds

Choosing an exterior finish is one of the more enjoyable decisions when specifying a garden room, and it is worth taking seriously — it sets the character of the building and shapes how much upkeep it will ask of you over the years. Render is one of the finishes available across the Modern Garden Rooms ranges, and a recent run of projects shared on their Instagram makes a good case for it. It is a smart design choice, giving a building a clean, contemporary, house-style appearance, but it is a wise practical one too: rendered walls are hard-wearing and ask very little of an owner once the building is up, which makes render one of the lower-maintenance finishes on offer.

Render opens up a huge amount of choice on colour — there are hundreds of shades to pick from, so you can match a building to your house, your garden, or simply your taste. That said, classic white remains far and away the most popular choice, and it is easy to see why. Paired with black-framed doors, windows and trims, white render creates a stylish, high-contrast look that reads as crisp and modern from anywhere in the garden. The pale wall throws the dark frames into relief, and the whole building takes on a sharp, considered quality. It is a combination that flatters the clean geometry Modern Garden Rooms are known for — and getting a rendered finish looking that crisp takes a practised hand. The team clearly know how to handle render, and across these projects you can see how well it accentuates the clean lines of their different ranges.

Mixing Render With Other Finishes

Render does not have to be an all-or-nothing choice. If you like the idea of a rendered finish but want to break it up with a second material, the Modern Garden Rooms design team will work with you to find a combination that suits the building and the garden it sits in.

One of the recent projects is a good example of this. It pairs render with composite wood cladding, letting the two finishes play off one another — the smooth plane of the render against the warmth and texture of the dark composite boards. The result is a building with more depth and interest than a single finish would give, while keeping the same clean, contemporary look. It is the kind of detail that is easy to overlook when you are picturing a garden room, and a reminder that the finish is something you can shape rather than compromise on.

Modern Garden Rooms design and install well-specified garden rooms across mainland UK. The best way to see how a rendered finish might look on your own building is their online 3D configurator, which lets you work through sizes, cladding and finish options, glazing and layout, and review an indicative specification and estimate before getting in touch.
