Garden hair salon with discreet storage by Lux Garden Rooms
A 6.3m × 3.2m hair salon in Warrington, Cheshire, with a backwash basin and two cutting stations, and a store room behind a partition with its own door.
Garden rooms are popular with hairdressers and beauty therapists who want a professional workspace at home while keeping work and home life separate. Clients arrive at their own entrance, and when the last appointment finishes the door gets locked on the salon.
This example by Lux Garden Rooms in Warrington, Cheshire is a working hair salon with a backwash basin and two cutting stations. The sliding doors along the garden-facing wall give it a connection with the garden that a high street salon can’t offer, and that’s part of the experience of visiting. What’s different about this one compared with other garden salons we’ve featured is the second room, built into the same footprint and used for salon storage.
At a glance
- Size: 6.3m × 3.2m overall, split by a partition into a 3.8m salon and a 2.1m store room.
- The store room: Its own frosted-glass French doors round the side, so stock can be fetched without walking through the salon while a client is in the chair.
- The salon: 3m anthracite aluminium sliding doors for daylight to judge colour by, skim-plastered walls and ceiling, laminate flooring, and a water heater supplying the wash station.
- Base and build: The existing concrete base was extended by a metre on four stainless steel ground screws rather than broken out, with SIP panels above.
- Company: Lux Garden Rooms, who clad every elevation in vertical Thermowood Redwood and finished the project in under three weeks.
Finished as a professional workspace
The salon entrance is a set of 3m aluminium sliding doors in anthracite. They give the building a shop-front quality and let in the kind of daylight that matters where colour is judged by eye. Opened up on a warm day, they deal with ventilation too.
Inside, the walls and ceiling are skim plastered, with the woodwork painted to match and premium laminate flooring underfoot. It reads as a proper room rather than an outbuilding, and it wipes down easily.
The electrics run from a mains connection to the house and include sockets, ceiling lights, a wall-mounted panel heater and three external wall lights. A water heater and storage unit supply hot water to the wash station. Fitted out with salon furniture, it’s a professional workspace.
Making use of the existing base
There was already a concrete base in the garden, and rather than break it out the team extended it by a metre with four stainless steel ground screw piles. That saved time and money. The building above is SIP panel construction, insulated to a standard that keeps the salon comfortable to work in through the year.
Thermowood on every elevation
Every side of this building is visible from the garden, so the client chose to clad all elevations in vertical Thermowood Redwood rather than saving the good timber for the front. It’s heat-treated rather than chemically treated, so it stays stable and durable and needs no painting or staining – a low-maintenance choice on a building in daily use. The anthracite roof, fascia, soffit, guttering and downspout tie the exterior together.
The Lux Garden Rooms team handled the whole project from the base up and finished it inside three weeks. The client was away for the first of them, and came back to a salon standing in the garden.
