From Log Cabin to Luxury Garden Room

From Log Cabin to Luxury Garden Room

Published: 22 April 2025
Reading Time: 3 minutes

When the owners of this garden in Ferndown decided it was time to replace their ageing interlocking timber log cabin, they had a clear vision: a fresh, contemporary space for entertaining friends and relaxing in comfort. They turned to Dorset based Executive Garden Rooms, known for delivering high-spec garden buildings with a turnkey service from design through to completion.

The result is a 6.5m x 6m bespoke garden room that’s a world away from the structure it replaced. Finished in low-maintenance exterior cladding, with large bi-fold doors and a striking picture window, this is a garden room designed for enjoyment—inside and out.

A Complete Service from Start to Finish

One of the things that sets Executive Garden Rooms apart is how they handle every stage of the build in-house. From the initial design conception through to final decoration, their team manages everything – including electrical connections, plastering, and painting – leaving clients with a fully finished building that’s ready to move into and enjoy.

In this case, the team replaced a tired log cabin with a contemporary, insulated garden room tailored to the client's lifestyle. The client wanted something truly bespoke, and Executive Garden Rooms delivered – with none of the restrictions that come with standard sizes or limited finish options.

A Modern, Low-Maintenance Finish

The new building is clad in HardiePlank® composite cladding in Boothbay Blue – a smart and durable choice that needs little upkeep and brings a modern, coastal feel to the garden. It’s paired with dark grey trims and a large set of aluminium bi-fold doors that open out onto a generous decked area – ideal for summer entertaining.

Light-Filled and Versatile Interior

The new building is far removed from the timber structure it replaced. Inside, it features the same level of finish you’d expect to find in a well-specified house – plastered and decorated walls and ceiling, and a carefully considered electrical layout. Every finish has been meticulously detailed, creating a refined and comfortable space that’s a pleasure to spend time in.

The new garden room flows into the existing garden design

Thanks to the mix of glazing, the room feels light and airy throughout the day. The owner has used furniture to define different areas within the space: a games zone with a pool table and dart board, a cosy TV lounge, and a conversational seating area with garden views through the large picture window – a feature that’s bound to be a talking point with guests.

A storage area has been discreetly incorporated into one corner of the room, offering a tidy place to keep boxes and other bits out of sight. It’s the kind of thoughtful detail that’s only possible when working with a company that offers a truly bespoke design service.

Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Living

The bi-folding doors open onto a generous decked terrace with outdoor seating zones. On warmer days, the seamless connection between inside and out makes it easy to relax and entertain across both spaces – a great example of how garden rooms can truly enhance day-to-day living.

Happy Clients, Zero Snagging

Feedback from the client speaks volumes about the process and the finished building:

John and Alison gave us all the confidence we needed to instruct EGR for our garden room project. We knew pretty well what we wanted and the answer to all our questions was ‘yes, we can do that’ – and sure they did! It’s a whole load different than being told ‘we can only do three colours and four standard sizes’. We needed ‘bespoke’ and that’s what we got (size 6m x 6.5m). Reassured by a professional but straightforward project plan and quotation, the complete job took only a day over 3 weeks. Their sub-contractors (electrician / roofer / plasterers) were equally skilled and overcame mini hurdles as would any true pro. Heated, insulated, bi-folds, a huge ‘picture window’ too, electrics for fridge, TV and Ethernet connection for fibre optic broadband… and one month since completion, nil snagging. I would highly recommend Executive Garden Rooms.
