Design inspiration: the wrap around canopy detail
How a canopy and deck can wrap around three sides of a garden room, shown in a 750mm-deep mock-up and in a Garden2Office building of just under 30sqm.
Adding a roof overhang to create a canopy detail with a decked step or veranda underneath is one of the most popular design features in garden room design. This feature is often used on the front elevation to frame the entrance into the room, while others extend it around the corner to form an L-shaped canopy and deck combination.
But if space allows, you can take this idea even further and wrap the canopy detail around the other side too. We don’t often see this because most people position their garden room across the width of their garden or tucked into a corner, but if you have room to position your building with space on three sides, it can be a great way to enhance the architecture and usability of the design.
At a glance
- The idea: Carrying the canopy and deck around three sides, where the building has space all round.
- Depth: From 300mm for a recessed detail and downlights, to deeper canopies with room for plants or a table.
- The mock-up: A 750mm canopy, with sliding doors and bifolds giving glazing on three sides.
- Lighting: Downlights in the canopy, washing light down the outside walls in the evening.
- Company: Garden2Office, whose example is built under Permitted Development.
Exploring the wrap around canopy concept
We mocked up a design to show how a full wrap-around canopy could look. Designers offer these canopy and veranda combinations in different depths. Some are just 300mm deep-enough to create a recessed visual detail to the walls and to incorporate exterior downlights-but you can go deeper to create usable space for potted plants or a small table and chairs. In our model, the canopy extends 750mm, offering a good balance between visual depth and functionality.
Because garden room designers work closely with you to tailor the layout and glazing configuration, you can position doors and windows where you want them. In our example, we’ve combined sliding doors with a set of bifolds to create triple-aspect glazing, resulting in a wonderfully light interior that enhances the indoor-outdoor feel garden rooms are known for.
We also mentioned how lighting can be incorporated within the canopy detail. As our model shows, exterior downlights can cast a soft curtain of light around the building, extending both its usability and aesthetic appeal into the evening.
Garden2Office are implementing this design feature beautifully
One company implementing this wrap-around canopy detailing particularly well is Garden2Office. We recently spotted an excellent example on their Instagram, where they regularly share new projects and highlight the versatility of their bespoke design approach and Swedish building system.

This particular project is just under 30sqm and, as Garden2Office note in their caption, showcases what can be achieved under Permitted Development. It’s a great real-world example of how effective the wrap-around canopy detail can be. We love the deep fascia line on the canopy, accentuated by the clever mix of horizontal cladding on the fascia and vertical cladding on the main walls-creating a crisp, contemporary look.
