Creating a dedicated garden art studio has long been a popular use for an insulated garden room. With full control over layout, glazing, and finishes, artists can tailor a space not only to create but also to display their work. This project by Smart Modular Buildings takes that a step further — transforming the idea of a garden studio into a true gallery experience.
A Home Gallery Designed for Light and Flow
James Trotts, a professional artist, worked closely with the design team at Smart Modular Buildings to create a space that would do more than house his art — it would showcase it. The result is a 10.7m x 3.7m Ultra model, configured as a contemporary gallery with a careful balance of solid walls for hanging artwork and glazed sections to welcome visitors and natural light.
Double outward-opening French doors create a striking entrance through the Ultra’s signature portico, complete with puddle lighting that subtly washes down the Western Red Cedar façade in the evening. A hallmark of the Ultra range, the cedar is fitted in floating panels against a contrasting black chassis, giving the building a refined, architectural presence. This layout ensures a welcoming arrival for clients and guests while maintaining the quiet elegance expected of a gallery setting.
Unlike many garden studios that focus on maximising views, this design deliberately avoids windows on the main display walls to protect finished pieces from direct sunlight. Instead, recessed ceiling downlights and directional spotlights create an interior lighting scheme similar to what you’d expect in a professional gallery setting, allowing each piece to be shown in the best possible light.
A Controlled Environment for Creative Work
The building’s structural strength and insulation are based on Smart Modular Buildings’ TuSC® construction system — a sectional approach that enables flexible layouts and rapid installation while delivering a solid, high-performance finish. The Ultra range features walls with a 135mm depth, combining solid-core insulation with a robust, easy-clean internal finish.
The interior chosen for this project uses Smart’s “Popular 2” package — white silk Finsa MDF, detailed with painted timber beading. Paired with light oak laminate flooring, it creates a clean, neutral backdrop for displaying artwork while remaining practical for studio use.
Climate control has also been carefully considered. The Ultra’s insulated envelope, combined with double glazing and air conditioning, creates a stable environment for both working and storing art — helping protect delicate materials from humidity and temperature swings throughout the year.
A Modular Building for Creative Expression
Smart Modular Buildings has built a reputation over two decades for creating adaptable, modular spaces across the UK. With recent upgrades to their ranges and finishes — including composite cladding options, flush architectural detailing, and improved insulation — the business has evolved to meet modern design expectations.
The Ultra range, available in widths from 2.1m to over 9m, offers the scale and flexibility required for projects like this gallery. Thanks to the modular TuSC® system, Smart’s design team can work around each client’s creative or practical requirements — whether that’s a multi-zone office, a salon or studio space, or a residential-grade annexe.
In James Trotts’ case, the result is a bespoke space that gives him a purpose-built environment to host, exhibit, and share his work — just a few steps from his home.
