This dual-use garden room by Smart Modular Buildings is a great example of how one well-considered building can support very different activities without compromise. Designed for a family with children who have contrasting interests, the building brings together a dedicated music space and a relaxed games and entertainment room under one roof.
Rather than trying to make one large room do everything, the solution was to create two clearly defined spaces that can be enjoyed independently or together - a theme reflected in both the layout and the way the building connects to the garden.
A Flexible Layout with Independent Access
The 8m x 3m building example of Smart Modular Buildings’ Belle range and has been carefully divided into two rooms, each with its own external access. This allows the spaces to operate independently - ideal when one room is in use for music practice while the other is being enjoyed by the rest of the family.
A connecting internal door links the two rooms, keeping the building feeling cohesive and allowing it to work as a single family hub when needed. It’s a simple but effective approach that shows how a garden room can be designed around multiple uses from the outset.
Garden Drum Room
One half of the building has been set up as a dedicated music studio. Fully insulated and positioned away from the main house, it provides a practical environment for playing instruments and recording, while helping to reduce sound transfer back to the home.
Internally, LED mood lighting has been added alongside ceiling downlights, creating a space that works just as well for daytime practice as it does for evening sessions.
Games and Entertainment Room Opening onto the Garden
The second room has been designed as a relaxed games and TV lounge. With space for a large screen and comfortable seating, it’s somewhere the family can gather to play games, watch films, or simply unwind.
Bi-fold doors open this room directly onto the decked area, creating an easy connection between indoors and out. In warmer months, the doors can be folded back to extend the living space into the garden, reinforcing the idea of the garden room as a natural extension of the home.
A Smart, Contemporary Exterior
Externally, the Belle range’s painted grooved cladding gives the building a clean, contemporary look. Finished here in a soft cream tone, it sits comfortably within the garden setting and pairs neatly with the bi-fold doors, which are grey on the outside and white internally.
Each room benefits from its own set of bi-fold doors, and external up-and-down lights have been positioned either side of the openings. This not only enhances the building’s appearance in the evening but also makes the decked area feel usable and inviting after dark.
Designed for Year-Round Use
As with Smart Modular Buildings’ wider range, the fully insulated structure ensures both rooms are comfortable throughout the year. Combined with the layered lighting design — including internal LED mood lighting, ceiling downlights, and exterior lighting — the building works just as well on a winter evening as it does on a summer afternoon.
The specification reinforces that this is a building designed for everyday use, not just as an occasional extra space.
One Building, Two Distinct Uses
This project clearly shows how a single garden room can support dual uses without either space feeling like a compromise. By splitting the layout, providing independent access, and paying close attention to lighting, insulation, and outdoor connections, Smart Modular Buildings have created a flexible family space that adapts to different needs throughout the day.
It’s a strong example of how thoughtful design can turn a garden building into a genuinely useful part of family life, rather than just an extra room at the end of the garden.
