A Contoured Acoustic Studio Crafted Around Its Composer

This 6.5m x 4.7m acoustic garden studio, created by Swift Unlimited, is quite unlike any other soundproofed building we’ve featured. While we’ve covered high-spec studios before, often with tailored acoustic upgrades, this is the first time we’ve seen a contoured, decoupled inner shell engineered specifically for both sonic clarity and spatial performance. It’s a unique approach to garden studio acoustics and reflects Swift Unlimited’s ability to start each project from a blank sheet.
A Bespoke Design from a Blank Sheet
Swift Unlimited don’t work from a catalogue of fixed options. Each of their buildings begins with a blank sheet and a conversation. They consider how the space will be used, how it needs to perform, and how it will sit within the garden, both visually and technically. The result is a bespoke solution designed around the client’s exact needs rather than squeezing those needs into an existing template.
In this case, the client, David, is a professional composer working at the highest level of the creative industries, collaborating with colleagues and clients globally. His previous workspace—a converted cellar—had served him well, but with a growing family and evolving career demands, it was time for a studio that could match the calibre of his output.
Inspired by a Proven Acoustic Blueprint
David was already familiar with Swift Unlimited’s work. Several years earlier, the team had completed a high-performance acoustic studio for one of his close collaborators in Sheffield. That studio had set the benchmark, not only for its technical precision but also for its nuanced acoustic profile, shaped by non-parallel walls, a multi-angled ceiling, and layers of sound treatment that delivered an exceptionally accurate sound environment.
David approached Swift Unlimited to use that successful design as a springboard for his own studio—this time adapted for a different setting, a different garden, and a different set of practical constraints.
Designed for the Setting
David’s property lies within a designated conservation area in the Yorkshire countryside. Gaining planning approval required careful consideration of the site’s character and the architectural style of surrounding buildings. Before work could begin on the build, Swift Unlimited’s planning consultants liaised with the local authority, presenting a proposal that respected the area’s stone-built vernacular while introducing a contemporary structure that made the most of the panoramic views.
The result is a building that blends beautifully with its surroundings, clad in a warm, sympathetic stone finish.
Acoustic Integrity at Every Layer
Behind the traditional exterior is a high-performance structure built using SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) for strength, airtightness and energy efficiency. To enhance sound isolation, Swift Unlimited installed two sets of windows and doors with a cavity between them. This creates a sealed acoustic break between the internal and external layers, helping to prevent sound transmission while still allowing natural light to fill the space—a careful balance between studio functionality and everyday comfort.
Every element of the studio has been engineered to support acoustic performance. Cable routes, air conditioning ducts and service penetrations have all been detailed to maintain the integrity of the acoustic envelope, with no weak points in the isolation layer.
A Unique Internal Form to Maximise Performance
While many purpose-built acoustic studios use rectangular forms with carefully specified treatments, this project takes a more advanced approach. Rather than relying solely on treatments to manage how sound behaves, Swift Unlimited have shaped the room itself to enhance acoustic performance from the outset.
The inner shell has been designed with angled, faceted walls and a subtly raked ceiling to eliminate parallel surfaces and scatter reflections more evenly. This reduces the risk of flutter echoes and standing waves, helping to create a more balanced, natural-sounding environment.
The internal structure is completely decoupled from the outer shell, with a layer of acoustic insulation in between. This gap not only prevents sound transmission but also plays a crucial role in shaping how sound behaves within the space—an essential quality for a composer working on nuanced, expressive work.
Built to Sound Good and Feel Right
The acoustic treatment of the space wasn’t just about technical performance—it was also about creating a space that feels comfortable and inspiring to spend time in. Swift Unlimited worked closely with David and his acoustic advisor to shape a room that supports focused work across long sessions, with a controlled, balanced acoustic that encourages creativity.
A Soundproof Garden Studio That Works Globally
Whether composing for film, working to tight deadlines or collaborating with teams overseas, David now works from a space that has been built entirely around his needs. From the contoured acoustic form to the precise technical detailing, every part of this project has been designed to help his work flow.
And in the quiet moments between compositions, the quality of the build speaks just as clearly as the music.
Nationwide Service and Current Pricing
Swift Unlimited work with clients across mainland UK, designing and building bespoke garden studios that respond to their intended use. While no two projects are the same, a garden studio of this size and acoustic specification would currently be priced in the region of £87,000 to £95,000, depending on the final specification and location.
