While many garden room companies claim to offer bespoke design services, their customisation is typically limited to conventional rectangular buildings. Garden Spaces takes a truly different approach-if you have an unusually shaped plot, they can create a uniquely shaped building that maximises every inch of available space. This L-shaped garden gym exemplifies how their genuine design flexibility transforms challenging spaces into perfect solutions.

The plot

Project overview

The client’s vision was to create a home gym within their garden, adjacent to an existing garden office built by another company. This resulted in an L-shaped area, complicated further by boundary walls set at different angles. Planning Permission was required for the project and was successfully obtained by the Garden Spaces team.

To maximise the space, they designed a custom L-shaped gym with angled walls that followed the plot’s contours, creating a 14.2 square metre area suitable for a range of gym equipment.

Designed for durability and functionality

Garden Spaces understands that a home gym has unique requirements, and they offer clients a variety of customisation options to suit these needs. By thoroughly discussing how clients intend to use their gym, they ensure that each specification supports long-term use and safety.

In this project, the foundation system was tailored to support both the ground conditions and the planned gym equipment, including a Rogue R-3W fold-back wall mount rack. The foundation combined ground screw foundations with a small concrete slab, a detail marked in red on the floor plan.

The SIPs walls have been reinforced with thick plywood panels

Their garden rooms are built using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), creating a strong and highly insulated structure. For walls supporting gym equipment, Garden Spaces can add reinforcement. Thick plywood panels were installed behind the walls of this gym, strategically placed in collaboration with the client.

Specialist rubber gym flooring was used in the form of an 8mm Smirna Series mat. This black anti-slip matting with blue specks provides shock absorption, enhancing safety and comfort.

Crisp white exterior design

Garden Spaces offers a variety of cladding options, including natural timber like Western Red Cedar and composite materials like Cedral, as well as rendered and cement particle board finishes.

For this garden gym, the client chose cement particle board, known for its resistance to rot and fungi, as well as its dimensional stability. The board was painted with a Resifine finish, combining resins and mineral powders to create a smooth, matte look. Unlike some other projects where an Anthracite Grey finish was chosen, the client opted for a crisp white finish to blend seamlessly with the existing office building and house.

The result is a sleek, modern exterior with neatly joined panels, making it an excellent alternative to traditional rendered walls-particularly beneficial in areas that are difficult to access.

The contrast between the white cement board panels and the Anthracite Grey (RAL7016) powder-coated aluminium door frames and trims adds visual interest. A dark grey soffit on the roof canopy, fitted with exterior-grade downlights, illuminates the front of the gym.

A small decked step at the entrance was finished in charcoal black composite decking, chosen for its rot resistance, durability, and colour retention.
