Dual entry garden office slots between the walls
A 4m × 2.4m office and music room, designed with an architect client to fit between sections of a derelict wall, with doors on both sides.
A client approached Sanctum Garden Studios with a distinctive request for a garden office/music room that could fit between sections of a derelict wall, featuring access doors on both sides. This required a bespoke solution that balanced functionality with aesthetics while making the most of the available space.
Sanctum Garden Studios’ client, an architect, chose the Contemporary Overhang range as the foundation for the design. By collaborating closely, they developed a layout and specification that fully utilised the space.

- Roof: Slopes side to side rather than front to back, so both elevations share the same profile, with a 200mm overhang on all sides.

A customised design: compact yet functional
The final design measures 4m x 2.4m. Unlike the standard roofline of the Contemporary Overhang range, which slopes front to back, this building’s roof slopes side to side, creating a uniform profile on both elevations. The roof overhang extends 200mm beyond the walls on all sides, enhancing the structure’s modern appeal.
Accessible from both sides
Anthracite Grey uPVC doors were installed on the front and back elevations. Each wall features single-glazed doors, with one set including a full-height glazed panel for additional natural light. This layout allows through-access to both parts of the garden, ensuring the room remains bright and practical.
Durable engineered wood cladding
Sanctum Garden Studios typically use a mix of Western Red Cedar and treated Redwood cladding for their Contemporary range. For this project, the client opted for a sleek, engineered timber weatherboard with a vertical grooved profile. Finished in dark grey to match the windows and roof trims, this material delivers a cohesive, modern aesthetic. It also provides a low-maintenance, durable exterior, resisting warping and cracking while withstanding the elements.
Acoustic insulation for band practice
As the garden office was also intended as a band practice space, the client requested a specialised insulation system with enhanced acoustic properties alongside thermal performance. Sanctum Garden Studios accommodated this by using an insulation system that reduces sound transmission while maintaining excellent thermal efficiency. This ensures the garden office is comfortable and quiet, even in colder months.
