Many garden room designers have started to utilize Millboard decking in their designs. It is a luxury composite decking board that offers the texture and colour of real wood, but with none of the drawbacks such as becoming slippery, discolouring and warping.
We have recently featured two projects which have utilized Millboard products. Aroha Escapes used it to create a deck in front of one of their bespoke garden rooms. This project shows how versatile Millboard can be as the Aroha Escapes team were able to create a curved step detail using it.
Another recent project we have explored that features Millboard is by A Room in the Garden. They have used the Weathered Oak Decking boards with its textured finish not only to create a decked area around one of their garden rooms but also on the walls to great effect.
Millboard, different from composite wood decking
While Millboard is a composite product, it differs from composite wood decking that is commonly available. Composite wood is a mix of plastic resins and wood fibres. Millboard, on the other hand, is a mix of polyurethane and mineral stone. This combination creates a robust and stable exterior product that has a long maintenance-free lifespan.
While composite wood decking is extruded into shape, Millboard is a hand moulded product that uses real wood to create the woodgrain finish. Each board is then coloured by craftsmen. The result is a board that offers the character of wood but does not lose its colour or become slippery in the way wood decking can be prone to.
This short video introduces us to the Millboard process, and is worth a watch:
New Millboard colour option
Millboard have recently launched a new colour option: Antique Oak. As we can see from this photo, it looks wonderful mixed with the colours of the garden.
The Millboard team tell us that the Antique Oak option offers similar tones to tropical hardwood decking and has a more tonal difference between each of the boards than their other colour options.
We think that the Antique Oak finish could look fantastic paired with both coloured garden room cladding finishes and more contemporary finishes such as Cedar or Larch.
