This compact but beautifully designed art studio is a great example of how a garden room can be tailored to meet creative needs without overwhelming a small garden. The client, David, was looking for a purpose-built space where he could paint still life subjects directly from life — meaning good natural light was essential. The 3m x 2.4m Hampton was the ideal solution: large enough to work in comfortably, small enough to fit neatly into his 4m x 3m garden area, and designed with floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with daylight.
Positioning was also key. As a right-handed artist, David wanted the light to come over his left shoulder. The Hampton’s flexible design allows buyers to specify the door position, making it easy to create the perfect working layout — in this case, with the easel set opposite the entry point and left undisturbed between sessions.
Personalised Style with Low Maintenance Finishes
While the Hampton Range is a pre-designed building available in three popular sizes, Sanctum Garden Studios offer a palette of options to personalise the finish. David opted for Western Red Cedar side panels, which contrast elegantly with the Anthracite Grey windows and trims — a colour pairing that ties in smartly with the bifold doors of the main house.
Internally, the Hampton has a smooth MDF finish which David painted a grey-white. Combined with the glazed front elevation, the result is a bright and uplifting interior — ideal for creative work. The images show how beautifully light bounces around the room, creating a calm and focused studio space.
