As seen at the big garden shows, garden rooms are becoming a key part of a landscaped garden design. The big show gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show, for instance, often include a garden room in their design. Garden designers appreciating that a fully insulated garden room extends the use and enjoyment of the garden beyond the summer months.
Garden room designers are used to working closely with garden designers and landscapers to create a building and garden that works as one overall design. This project by Swift Garden Rooms is a fine example of this process.
Swift’s client wanted to create a flexible garden room space as part of a full garden makeover. With a baby due, they wanted to create a versatile new room that could be used as a home office one day, a playroom another, and a room to entertain guests in-between. The decided that a 4.5m x 3.2m garden room fitted the bill.
The Swift Garden Rooms team worked closely with their client’s landscaper who created a raised base onto which the room would be built. The Swift team would normally handle the installation of the foundation system, but in this case, specified the technical details for the base, which was designed so that the floor within the room is at the same height as the patio outside.
With the floor being the set at the same height as the patio. Particular attention was given to the fall and drainage of the patio. Extra thought was also given to concealing where the mains electricity enters the building.
This was a bespoke design project. Bespoke garden room design is a collaborative process between client and designer. This gives you the freedom to mix and match materials, without the constraints of a standard palette which would often dictate the use of one cladding finish. In this case, Swift’s client decided to mix grey aluminium doors with Western Red Cedar cladding and panels of crisp white resin render. All high spec, durable finishes which will stand the test of time. Creating a building that will still be looking good and performing long after its 10-year warranty.
