Garden rooms make excellent family rooms, a place where the whole family can retreat too together for say movie nights, or alone for tasks like homework. Ark Design/Build have recently completed a Cedar clad garden room for a family in South London.
As well as creating a room in the garden where the family could spend time, they also wanted to create some valuable secure storage. The Ark Design/Build team discreetly incorporated a storage room into the corner of this 15sqm building.
The storage shed is accessed via a secret door which has been clad in the same Cedar cladding as the walls. The door has been immersed in the wall so that the front is flush with the wall cladding. This combination of matching the cladding material and the positioning of the door helps it discreetly blend into the wall.
The door has been fitted with a digital security lock; this is a nice touch which we have only seen on a few secret storage sheds, often a traditional leaver lock is used. Inside, the storage room is lined with OSB for a durable finish.
The room itself has a light and airy feel thanks to the plastered and decorated walls and ceiling. The floor has been finished in a modern grey laminate floor. The room is flooded with natural light through the sliding doors on the front wall and the long window on the side wall. We like how the Ark Design/Build team have used a full-length window with an opening fanlight at the top. This is an easy way to get some ventilation into the room; many buyers overlook this option.
The alcove detail on the front elevation is a nice feature and enhances the doors. The up/down exterior lights either side of the doors also look great.
The Cedar cladding has a soft sheen and will maintain its natural colouration, thanks to the application of OSMO UV-Oil. Ark Design/Build apply this oil as they install the cladding and it will need topping up every year or so depending on the exposure of the building. The oil will keep a garden room looking like new.
