There seems to be a trend at the moment to use a garden room as a teenager’s den. Offering teenage kids the independence of having their own space, yet keeping them close by. Sanctum Garden Studios were recently approached by a client in Bolton to create a one-off design for them, so their teenage children could have a room of their own.
This garden room is a twist on Sanctum Garden Studios Contemporary Range. The key difference is the recessed front wall, which gives the building a real sense of depth. The recess is a substantial 700mm. A 4-meter wide section of floor to ceiling glazing has been positioned in the recess. The glazing is made up with a set of sliding doors and a fixed window on either side. This is a clever and relatively cost effective way of creating a large expanse of glazing. There is a further narrow floor to ceiling window to the side elevation.
Externally the room is finished in the popular Western Red Cedar cladding, which has been fixed vertically to create clean lines. Cedar is popular because of its natural colour, although it will change to a silver grey as it ages. It is also popular because of its low maintenance properties.
Another low maintenance material, EPDM has been used on the roof. The dark grey finish of this rubber sheet has been softened by the addition of a layer of gravel. EPDM is well used in garden room design because it is fitted in one piece, so it reduces the risk of a leak.
The interior of the room has been plastered and decorated, with a laminate wood flooring. LED lights have been recessed into the ceiling creating a modern look.
The owners plan to add a bar, pool table, sofas a large TV making it the perfect hang-out room for their teenage kids.
