For active families, adding a home fitness room is an excellent idea, offering a space where you can set up your favourite exercise equipment or create a tranquil environment for yoga or Pilates. Many families look to their garden for a home gym, and by working with an experienced garden room designer, a garden gym can be tailored to suit your preferred workout style.
This 2.4m x 3.6m (8ft x 12ft) garden gym by Heritage Living Group demonstrates a purpose-built fitness studio, designed to make the most of the available space in the owners’ garden. It will serve not only as a workout area but also as a relaxing garden retreat and an entertainment space, all while enjoying the lovely countryside views.
Designed to Maximise the View
Heritage Living Group primarily operates in the South Yorkshire region. This project, located in Barnsley, sits at the end of a garden with views over the countryside, where cattle graze nearby. The clients wanted to make the most of these views, creating a space where they could both exercise and entertain.
Heritage Living Group offer a bespoke design service, working closely with each client to create a garden room tailored to its intended use and the surrounding garden. In this case, design consultations revealed that the clients wanted not only a fully insulated garden gym but also an enhanced outdoor area for entertaining.
Unlike many other garden room companies, Heritage Living Group are willing to work with clients to incorporate landscaping around their buildings. We recently featured an entertainment space of theirs that includes a large expanse of terraced decking, enhancing the indoor-outdoor lifestyle.
Large Composite Deck Extends the Garden Gym
For this project, the insulated garden gym opens onto a 55sqm composite deck with a teak finish, framed by timber sleepers that add a traditional touch to the design.
Composite decking is an ideal match for a garden room, as it requires minimal maintenance to retain its appearance and doesn’t become slippery as timber decking can.
Narrow Garden Room Slots into the Space
The gym building is positioned behind an existing building, necessitating a long, narrow design. A 2.4m x 3.6m (8ft x 12ft) layout was chosen, with French doors on the 2.4m wall opening onto the decked terrace. A rectangular picture window was added on the 3.6m side to maximise countryside views.
The garden gym exterior combines cream uPVC doors and windows with Antique Green slatted composite cladding on the prominent elevations, a choice Heritage Living Group have used before on gym projects. It’s a lovely option for this countryside location.
The rear elevation is finished with a cement fireboard painted in the same green as the slatted composite cladding. Cement fireboard is a low-maintenance choice, ideal for less visible elevations.
Well-Specified Interior
The garden room’s interior is akin to that of a newly built home, with plastered and painted walls and ceiling, and laminate flooring. Modern matt black switches were chosen, and LED downlights are recessed into the ceiling. An electric panel heater provides warmth on colder days.
Heritage Living Group use Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) for the core structure of their buildings, creating a highly insulated envelope. This is enhanced with additional layers of materials, and double-glazed doors and windows, ensuring a comfortable, energy-efficient space for year-round use.
