Over the years we have explored a few garden offices made from shipping containers, but they have tended to be by companies based in Europe rather than here in the UK, which effects costs & logistics.
We were therefore interested to hear about bespoke shipping container garden rooms by WALCON based in Banbridge, Northern Ireland
While all designs start out as a steel shipping container, the WALCON team will work closely with you to create your own unique garden room design.
Shipping containers are 8ft / 2440mm wide, but you can specify the length of the building. If you are looking for a room wider than 8ft / 2440mm you can double up with two containers joined together, creating a 16ft / 4880mm room. WALCON tell us that the most common sizes specified are 20ft / 6096mm long by 8ft / 2440mm wide and 20ft / 6096mm by 16ft / 4880mm.
You can specify the number and location of windows. WALCON offer the option of adding security shutters if that is what you require.
Internally, the container has stud work frame which houses ISOWOOL insulation. A vinyl coated plywood forms the interior finish. If you want to divide the internal space up into two or more rooms, this can be done with timber stud work.
As part of the bespoke design service, you can specify the electrical package, depending on how you plan to use the room. For instance, if you are using the container as a home office you might need power sockets or Cat6 cabling to be incorporated.
Prices start at £12,000 plus VAT and typical lead time is a modest 21 days. Delivery is by Hiab lorry, and the complete building will be craned into position. The ease of this is dependant on how close your intended site is to where the lorry can park. Best bet is to talk to the WALCON team for the specifics on the delivery. Delivery costs are typically between £120 and £1,000.
