When the owners of this West Sussex home approached Timber Rooms, they wanted to create a versatile building that could serve as both a comfortable garden office and a second living space. As their family grew, they needed somewhere that offered privacy, flexibility, and separation between work and home life — all without losing valuable garden space.
Timber Rooms worked closely with the couple to bring their vision to life. The owners describe in their video testimonial how the team were more than happy to keep tweaking the design until everything felt right. This included moving the original position of the bathroom, with Mark from Timber Rooms suggesting a more practical layout to maximise comfort and flow within the space.
Design to Completion — Handled by One Team
One of the main attractions for the clients was that Timber Rooms handle every stage of the project — from design and groundwork through to the final connections and finishes. Many companies ask clients to organise foundations or utility connections themselves, which can mean juggling trades and schedules. Timber Rooms’ turnkey approach removed that stress entirely. Their service included the groundworks, electrical installation, and connections to the mains services for the bathroom.
The owners commented on how impressed they were with the speed and efficiency of the build, describing the installation team as a pleasure to work with.
A Place to Work and Unwind
Now complete, the building has transformed how the owners use their home. The new office provides a peaceful place to focus, helping to restore a clear boundary between work and personal life. They say spending time in the garden room gives them a different perspective on their home and feels like being on holiday — away from things.
Contemporary Design and Lasting Finishes
The garden room combines style with practicality. Its contemporary design is finished in light grey Hardie Plank cladding, a durable cement fibreboard that requires minimal maintenance and keeps its smart appearance for years. The roof extends beyond the front wall to form a deep canopy with integrated downlights, while a composite deck provides a welcoming entrance that’s perfect for a couple of chairs.
A large set of central sliding doors open wide to create a flowing connection between indoors and out. Their anthracite grey frames complement the lighter grey cladding, while a square picture window above the desk area brings in natural light and views of the garden. Additional opening windows in the bathroom and on the side wall ensure the space is well ventilated.
Interior Comfort and Year-Round Use
Inside, the garden room is finished to a high specification, with plastered and decorated walls, laminate flooring, and a thoughtfully tailored electrical layout. In this case, the specification included air conditioning for year-round temperature control.
The result is a versatile building that serves as an office, living room, and guest space — adding valuable, flexible accommodation to the home without the disruption of a house extension.
