When Fran in SW11 decided it was time to replace an old shed and lean-to that had outlived their usefulness, the brief was clear: design a secure, low-maintenance garden office that would work within a small, tricky-shaped plot without blocking access to the gates.
Space is always at a premium in London, and this project shows how a thoughtful design approach can transform even the tightest corner into a valuable workspace.
Compact Yet Functional Design
To fit the courtyard, Cosy Garden Rooms created a wedge-shaped structure: 1.9m deep, widening to 2.25m, giving a total floor area of 7.6m². Inside, the back wall follows the angled profile, but this doesn’t compromise the functionality of the space. It’s a bright, practical room that will be easy to furnish with a desk and storage, while still leaving room for a comfortable chair to relax in during downtime.
The interior finish combines Cosy Garden Rooms’ signature grooved wall panelling with a smooth ceiling and contemporary laminate flooring. Anthracite Grey uPVC doors and windows add a contemporary touch externally, while their white interior frames help maintain the light, airy feel indoors. The mix of French doors and small opening windows across the front elevation, paired with a large picture window on the right-hand wall, flood the office with natural light. It’s easy to imagine a desk positioned here with views into the heart of the garden.
Durable Exterior with Stylish Detailing
For the exterior, James Hardie Plank cladding in Grey Slate has been chosen for its durability and low-maintenance properties. The light boards are smartly paired with a darker grey skirt around the base that ties in with the doors and windows. A slim roof canopy runs across the front, housing exterior-grade downlights that will cast a stylish glow across the façade at night.
The result is a compact but highly functional garden office that blends seamlessly into its setting. Built with robust materials and a thoughtful design, it will provide Fran with a workspace she can comfortably use every day of the year.
