Teenagers Den in the Garden with Storage

This garden room by Lux Garden Rooms is a great example of how a modest footprint can solve two problems at once. Built for a family in Greater Manchester, the 5.0m x 2.5m building gives a teenager their own space, while a separate storage room at one end offers practical storage for the rest of the family.
At 2.5 metres deep the building doesn't dominate the garden, but the internal layout makes the most of what's there. There's space for a desk and comfortable seating, so occupants can settle into focused work or have friends over — the room functions well for both without feeling like a compromise.
French Doors, Full-Height Sidelights
The garden-facing wall is glazed with 2.3m wide French doors flanked by full-height sidelights. The sidelights here are narrower than is commonly seen. They extend the amount of glazing and offer glimpses of the greenery beyond. The French doors, when open, mean the space spills naturally to the outside, extending the usable area in warmer weather and making the room feel larger than its depth suggests.
Hardie Plank in Heathered Moss
The cladding is Hardie Plank cement fibre in Heathered Moss. Hardie Plank has a tactile wood grain texture — it has more visual depth than smooth composite boards and the client's colour choice sits well in a garden setting. The colour here reads quietly against planting without disappearing into it. As a material, Hardie Plank is a composite board, making it durable and requiring no maintenance or painting, which suits a building expected to see daily use for years to come.
Anthracite Grey Canopy
A 300mm deep canopy runs across the garden-facing elevation, finished in Anthracite Grey to match the doors. The contrast between the dark grey finish and the Heathered Moss boards is well-judged. The canopy features LED downlighting which casts useful light down the entrances to both rooms. It also provides a degree of shelter at the entrances, which is a practical detail on a building used year-round.
A Separate Storage Room
The storage room is accessed by its own composite door, independent from the main den entrance. Doors like these come with multi-point locking systems as standard, which gives the storage area proper security for garden equipment, bikes, or outdoor kit. The separate entrance means the teenagers have a space to themselves, undisturbed by anyone coming and going to the storage room.
Well Specified Interior
Inside, the main room is finished to a high standard, with plastered and decorated walls — a finish that makes a garden room feel like a proper extension of the home. Laminate flooring, spot lighting, multiple power sockets, WiFi connectivity, and an electric heating system mean the space is ready for year-round use from the day it is handed over by the Lux Garden Rooms team.
