Laura, a Suffolk homeowner, loved her house and community but had begun to feel the limits of space as her family grew. Moving wasn’t an option – her children were settled in local schools, and the family was deeply rooted in their neighbourhood. The answer came from Smart Modular Buildings, who created a Suffolk Barn living space designed to provide the flexibility and comfort her family needed.
Smart Modular Buildings offer their seven ranges as high-quality garden rooms, but they also make them available with an enhanced specification as liveable annexe spaces. This project is one of those examples — designed and finished for comfortable year-round living.
Expanding the Family Home Without Moving
The Suffolk Barn range has long been one of our favourite traditional garden room designs. Inspired by the local architecture in Suffolk, where Smart Modular Buildings are based, the range is characterised by its weatherboard cladding, which can be finished in your choice of colour. In this case, the client chose Wolf Grey, paired with a High Line Roof finished in tiles. The range also includes a Low Line Roof option, which brings the ridge height down, but the High Line design creates a wonderful vaulted ceiling, making the rooms feel light and airy – as we can see in the photos.
A Modern Annexe You Want to Your Spend Time In
Smart Modular Buildings work with each client to create the internal floor plan, defining how the rooms will flow and function. In this example, the layout includes defined bedrooms with sliding doors, a large kitchen-living area, and a bathroom. The owner went on to have the kitchen and bathroom fittings installed, creating a totally personalised annexe.
The result is a light-filled, modern annexe that feels inviting from the moment you step inside – a place you genuinely want to spend time in. Medium oak flooring brings warmth to the interior, while a climate control system ensures year-round comfort. Details such as exterior contemporary lighting and a towel radiator complete the picture of a thoughtfully designed, fully equipped living space.
