This garden room project highlights the distinctive style of Rustic Realities, known for their creative use of natural materials and rustic design. The brief from the client was simple yet specific: a 5m x 3.5m garden building embodying 100% Rustic Realities style. The result is a versatile family entertaining room that serves as both a cosy sitting room and an ideal venue for parties. With plans to add a bar in the future, the fully insulated garden building promises to be a hub of social activity for years to come.
A Collaborative Design Process
Rustic Realities work closely with their clients to tailor the size, layout, and finishes to their specific requirements and tastes. This is evident in the archive of articles we have written about their work. They have an eye for mixing materials and textures to create a garden room that exudes character. The design process includes the creation of a 3D model of the building, allowing clients to visualise what it will look like, as shown in the image of this project.
Versatile 5m x 3.5m Garden Room
Measuring 5m x 3.5m, the building offers ample space for a variety of uses. The interior design showcases a minimalist yet inviting aesthetic, with white walls and ceilings that create a bright, airy feel. Two skylights enhance this effect, providing views of the sky and the towering yew tree behind the building. An opening pillbox window at the back ensures airflow, while a tall window frames a view of the characterful garden wall outside.
Practical details include black sockets, switches, and a sleek black glass-front heater, which complement the understated elegance of the space. Ceiling spotlights provide functional lighting indoors, while rustic country-style wall lights illuminate the deck outside, adding a warm, inviting glow.
Exterior Features and Finishes
The exterior of the garden room is a testament to Rustic Realities’ distinctive use of materials and textures. The façade combines three types of cladding: Cedar shingles and waney-edge Larch boards on the front, with black feather-edge cladding on the sides and rear. The fascias, crafted from waney-edge Larch boards, tie the design together seamlessly.
At the front of the building, a 1.2m-deep covered deck constructed from yellow Balau hardwood creates a welcoming outdoor space. A Cedar shingle-clad cheek adds character and enhances the rustic charm. Wide black timber patio doors provide an elegant entryway, blending form and function.
Robust Foundations and Sustainable Insulation
Set on a groundscrew foundation installed by No More Digging Thames Valley, the building benefits from a stable and eco-friendly base. The insulation is a hybrid system, combining closed-cell insulation in the base with Thermafleece cosy wool in the walls and ceiling. This ensures year-round comfort and energy efficiency, aligning with Rustic Realities’ commitment to sustainable building practices.
Designed for Versatility
The integration of natural light is a key feature of this garden room. Skylights and large windows bring in daylight, while strategic lighting choices enhance the atmosphere after dark. The space’s design allows it to transition effortlessly from a family room to a lively entertaining area, making it highly functional for the family.
