Reading Time: 4 minutes
My Outhouse design and install bespoke garden rooms and garden annexes from their Hertfordshire base, with projects delivered across the South of England. A family-run business with a background in construction and carpentry, their buildings are designed as comfortable year-round living spaces.
Clients can visit their Borehamwood showroom to explore materials and layout ideas in person, and the company’s reputation is backed by their status as a Which? Trusted Trader and a large collection of verified 5-star reviews.
Every project is shaped around the individual garden and how the space will be used. Where possible, garden rooms are designed to comply with Permitted Development rules, and the team’s in-house knowledge of regulations helps smooth the process. My Outhouse deliver a fully managed, turnkey service using their own trained installers — including ground screw foundations, SIP construction, electrics, heating and high-spec interior finishes — all combined into an inclusive specification with no hidden extras.
Alongside high-spec garden rooms for everyday uses such as home offices, gyms and studios, My Outhouse also design self-contained garden annexes. For these larger, habitable buildings, they provide support with planning permission applications and guidance through Building Regulations where required.
My Outhouse Design Style
My Outhouse buildings have a strong contemporary feel, but as bespoke designers, they adapt each project to suit the client’s taste, intended use and the character of the garden.
Mono-pitched rooflines are a signature feature, finished in a single-piece EPDM membrane chosen for its durability and long service life. Across different projects, designs range from clean cubed forms to buildings with subtle eaves detailing or canopy features that create sheltered entrances. Recessed front walls are another option, forming porch-like areas that can be enhanced with exterior-grade LED lighting washing down the façade.
Decks and steps are frequently integrated into the design, particularly on sloping plots where ground screw foundations come into their own. Careful detailing of decking skirts and the incorporation of steps where needed helps create a natural transition between the indoor space and the garden beyond.
The photos in this article give a flavour of this approach, but their wider project gallery shows how they tailor each design to the client and their garden — from cladding-led statements to glazing layouts carefully arranged around privacy, light and views of the garden.
Exterior Options, Doors and Windows
Because every garden room or annexe is made to order, exterior finishes are selected to suit both the property and the client’s style preferences. Options include low-maintenance composite cladding in a range of contemporary colours and profiles, Western Red Cedar for a natural timber look, charred timber for a darker, textured finish, as well as brick slip and rendered exteriors for projects that need to tie in comfortably with the main house.
Doors and windows are equally flexible. Double-glazed French or sliding doors are common, with wider bi-folding openings available where a stronger connection to the garden is wanted. My Outhouse carefully consider the position of glazing, doors and solid wall sections in every design, balancing daylight, privacy, views and internal layout so the building works as well on the inside as it looks from the outside.
Designed for Year-Round Use
My Outhouse garden rooms and annexes are designed for comfortable, everyday use throughout the year.
Ground screw foundations minimise disruption in the garden and create a level, raised base that allows airflow beneath the structure, helping to manage moisture. Above this sits a highly insulated SIP (structural insulated panel) shell, with insulation levels in the walls, floor and roof creating an energy-efficient envelope comparable to a new-build home.
The roof is finished with a single-piece EPDM membrane for reliable waterproofing, and the airtight construction helps keep heating demand low while maintaining an even internal temperature across the seasons. On-site construction typically takes around ten days, with lead times usually in the region of six weeks from order.
Interior Finish and Electrical Specification
Inside, My Outhouse buildings are finished to feel like a natural extension of the home. Walls are plastered and painted with skirting boards, creating a crisp, modern proper room finish. Laminate flooring is included as standard, with a wide choice of colours to suit different styles, and specialist flooring such as rubber gym matting can be incorporated where required.
Electrics are fully installed, including LED ceiling lighting, internal double sockets, external wall lights and an outdoor power socket. Heating is also part of the standard specification, with options to upgrade to underfloor heating or alternative systems depending on how the space will be used. The result is a building that’s ready to move into and start using as soon as the team hands it over.
For habitable garden annexes, the specification can be extended to include bathrooms, kitchenettes and full plumbing layouts, supported by the company’s design input for planning and Building Regulations compliance.
