Specifications

Customised soundproofing options

Soundproof garden studio specifications vary significantly between providers. While some companies may add a single layer of acoustic plasterboard and call it ‘soundproof,’ others design with multiple layers to achieve measurable sound reduction levels. Garden Spaces belongs in the latter category, offering four different acoustic specifications that range from 39dB to 56dB in soundproofing capability. Additional features like acoustic porches can further boost this performance, reaching reductions of up to 60dB

The brief

A personal music space in the garden

This particular client sought a dedicated, soundproof space away from their home to play instruments without disturbing nearby properties. They also required integrated storage. They opted for a 4.08m wide by 2.78m deep garden studio with a height of 2.5m, resulting in a music studio of 7.5m² and an adjoining storage space of 3.1m².

To achieve the desired soundproofing, they selected Garden Spaces’ Platinum Acoustic Package. This enhances the standard SIP core structure with multiple layers of acoustic insulation across the floor, walls, and roof, offering approximately 56dB of sound reduction.

An acoustic porch was added to further improve sound containment, bringing the total sound reduction to around 60dB.

Acoustic porches with soundproof door solutions

Doors and windows can be weak points in a soundproofing setup. In this studio, an acoustic porch with a double-door system overcomes this issue. A high-spec glass door forms the exterior layer, while a solid acoustic door is fitted on the inner side. This arrangement allows the inner door to be left open when music is not being played, allowing natural light through the glass door.

Minimising doors and windows in a soundproof garden studio is essential. However, the client wanted a round porthole-style window, so Garden Spaces sourced a high-spec, powder-coated aluminium window with performance glazing. This compact window allows light into the studio without compromising acoustic integrity – and looks stylish too!

Aesthetic and practical finishing touches

Despite the minimal glazing, the plastered and decorated interior has a light and airy feel. The client supplied their own light fittings, which were installed along with the other electrics by Garden Spaces.

Externally, the studio is clad in Western Red Cedar with a UV-protective oil finish, preserving its rich reddish-brown hue and preventing it from turning silver over time. Powder-coated aluminium doors, windows, and roof kerbs, all finished in Grey (RAL7016), complete the sophisticated look.
