An Edinburgh-based professional artist wanted to create a dedicated workspace at home. Initially, she had a friend who is an architect draw up plans, but soon realised that working with a specialist company would be the more efficient route to achieving a high-quality result. She turned to JML Garden Rooms, who offer a complete service – handling everything from design through to the final connections.
SIPs Construction for Year-Round Comfort
JML Garden Rooms are specialists in Structural Insulated Panel (SIPs) construction. These panels form a highly insulated envelope, which is the core structure of their multi-layer build-up. Combined with double-glazed doors and windows, this makes their art studios comfortable to use all year round, while also providing stable conditions to keep materials and finished artworks safe.
Medium-Sized Garden Studio
This building measures 13 square metres, which we’d class as a medium-sized garden room. The footprint has been laid out wider rather than deeper, giving the client a generous amount of workable space. The corner configuration of glazing adds to this sense of openness, making the studio feel bright and airy.
Flooded With Natural Light
The design features a pair of outward-opening doors on the front elevation that are wider than we typically see, positioned alongside a corner glazing panel that continues around to the side. This configuration, combined with a rooflight above, floods the interior with natural light – ideal for an art studio. To maximise wall space for sketches, the client opted to remove the standard side window – a practical choice that makes the studio work even better for her needs.
Finished With a Creative Flair
Instead of plasterboard and paint, the interior has been left with the SIPs faces exposed. These are OSB panels, painted white. It’s a clever choice for an art studio — the white finish bounces light around the room, while the subtle texture of the OSB introduces an industrial, slightly raw quality to the space. This balance of brightness and texture gives the studio a distinctive creative feel, perfectly suited to its purpose.
Stylish Exterior Detailing
Externally, the building has been finished in vertically fitted Western Red Cedar cladding in JML’s signature tongue-and-groove profile. This is paired with dark grey doors and windows, giving a clean, contemporary look. The glazing configuration has been subtly recessed so that the roof and floor structures frame the corner, adding a smart architectural detail to the design.
Popular Lowlander Design
This art studio is based on the Lowlander range, one of JML Garden Rooms’ most popular options. We’ve recently featured several other Lowlander projects, each one demonstrating how versatile this design can be when tailored to the client’s requirements.
