Lowlander Garden Room in a Conservation Area Setting

Many families are turning to the garden to create a peaceful retreat away from the bustle of daily life. For the owners of this traditional stone property, the goal was a space for relaxing, reading, and studying in a quiet corner of the garden. With the landscaping recently completed, they were keen to choose a garden room that would complement both the setting and the wider conservation area. After extensive research, they selected JML Garden Rooms for their modern design approach and the high standard of finish offered across their range.
Contemporary Design That Sits Comfortably in a Traditional Setting
The Lowlander was the perfect choice, offering a clean-lined, modern aesthetic while sitting comfortably in the rural garden. At 13 square metres, it’s a compact yet versatile space, ideal for use as a reading room or home office. Its cubed roofline and recessed corner of floor-to-ceiling glazing give the building a sleek, contemporary form. The dark grey frames of the doors and windows contrast elegantly with the vertical Western Red Cedar cladding, which draws the eye to the height and structure of the building and enhances the crisp silhouette of the design.
Tailored Planning and Installation Support
Because the garden lies within a conservation area, full planning permission was required. JML Garden Rooms took care of the whole process, preparing the necessary drawings, managing the application, and securing approval in under eight weeks. Their full-service approach extended to site clearance, installation of precast pad foundations, and coordination of all external and internal works. To protect the newly landscaped garden, ground protection measures such as AstroTurf coverings and a large gazebo were used throughout the build.
Finished for Year-Round Enjoyment
Inside, the garden room is finished to a high specification designed for everyday use in all seasons. Underfloor heating ensures a comfortable temperature year-round, and a compact kitchenette was fitted with storage, an integrated drinks fridge, and a sink. A small rectangular window was positioned at just the right height to frame a view of the nearby cricket pitch—perfect for catching the action from a quiet spot in the garden. On rainy days, a Sky TV connection provides a cosy alternative.
